Dakota State entertains Jamestown in four-game baseball series at Flynn Field

THIS WEEK: Dakota State (13-14 overall record) continues their 12-game home stand this weekend at Flynn Field. The Trojans welcome their former Dakota Athletic Conference foe Jamestown (11-7-1) in a four-game A.I.I. (Association of Independent Institutions) conference series. The doubleheader starts at 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
LAST MEETING: Jamestown won the last six meetings with Dakota State, including a four-game series sweep last season at Flynn Field. The last time Dakota State defeated the Jimmies was in the DAC Postseason Tournament quarterfinals on May 8, 2010 in Jamestown, N.D. The Trojans came on top by the score of 9-2.
ABOUT JAMESTOWN: Tom Hager is in his 13th season as Jamestown baseball head coach. In 2011, the Jimmies won the DAC Tournament Championship, going 32-13-1 on the season and qualified for the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening round for the third straight year. JC is currently 11-7-1 this season. The Jimmies dropped a road doubleheader at Morningside, a member of Great Plains Athletic Conference, by the scores of 12-5 and 5-4 on March 18.
TROJANS BEGIN HOME STAND WITH A BANG: Dakota State returned home at Flynn Field for the first time this season on March 21. The Trojans began their 12-game home stand by recording a combined seven home runs to help DSU sweep their in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan 6-5 and 6-3. Ryan Bourcier hit two home runs in the first game, including a game-winning 2-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jason Hershfield recorded a total of three home runs in both games and tossed the seventh inning for a save in each game. Anyelo Roman and Corey Pasichnyk each also added a home run for the Trojans. Josh Caven notched his second win of the season in game one victory as he tossed five innings. Brandon Womack recorded the win in the second game of the doubleheader by working six innings and allowed three runs on six hits.
HERSHFIELD EARNS A.I.I. MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Jason Hershfield of Dakota State was selected by the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) as its male athlete of the week honor, announced on March 19. He picked up a win and a save on the mound for the Trojans as they split a four-game series with Hastings (Neb.). Hershfield improved his pitching record to 3-2 on the season and recorded his third save of the season in a pair of 3-1 victories. He tossed a total of eight innings, allowed just one run on five hits and no walks, while striking out 10 batters.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: According to DakStats-NAIA statistical website as of Friday, March 23, Dakota State ranks 24th in the nation in home runs per game (0.8). Jason Hershfield ranks 10th in the nation in total saves with five (5), 35th in opponent's batting average (.191), 39th in hits allowed per nine innings (6.2) and earned run average (1.73). Hershfield and Anyelo Roman are 31st in the nation in total home runs (6). Seth Doxey ranks 19th in total earned runs allowed (5) and earned run average (1.31).
DSU QUICK LEADERS: Anyleo Roman leads Dakota State in hits with 29 (batting average—0.337). He records 21 RBIs this season (0.8 per game). Anyelo Roman and Jason Hershfield each lead the team with six home runs. Chaz Palmer records two triples for DSU. Rays Roman swipes 11 bases for the Trojans. He hit seven doubles this season. Seth Doxey leads the team in earned run average with 1.31. Hershfield averages 10.42 strikeouts per nine innings (42 total strikeouts). He leads the team with five saves.
A.I.I. BASEBALL INDEPENDENT TOURNAMENT: The A.I.I. Baseball Independent Tournament will be hosted by Cal State-San Marcos on May 2-5. Besides host-team Cal State-San Marcos, five other teams will qualify to the independent tournament. The winner and runner-up of the independent tournament each will receive an automatic bid to the national tournament. Cal State-San Marcos is the defending A.I.I. Baseball champions where they defeated Houston-Victoria (Texas) 10-3 in the championship game. The NAIA Baseball Championship Opening Round Tournament is held on May 10-14 on nine different campus sites (selected by the NAIA). The Avista-NAIA World Series will be held in Lewiston, Idaho on May 25 to June 1.
