Jimmies sweep Trojans to even four-game baseball series at Flynn Field

MADISON, S.D. – In the battle of former Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) baseball foes Sunday afternoon at Flynn Field, Jamestown (N.D.) swept Dakota State to earn a four-game series split. The Trojans fell short in the first game 3-2 and JC earned an 18-6 second game victory.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 15-16 and 2-2 in Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference games. Jamestown ended their four-game losing streak and raised their record to 13-9-1 and 2-2 in A.I.I.
Game 1 – Jamestown (N.D.) 3, Dakota State 2
Spencer Flaten hit an RBI double to score Rudy Strnad to give the Jimmies a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.
The Trojans answered back with one run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Anyelo Roman hit a double with one out. Jason Hershfield added a two-out RBI double to score Roman to tie the game at 1-1.
JC produced two runs – both with two outs – in the top of the sixth frame to regain their lead at 3-1. Perry Wilkinson hit an RBI single and Flaten added an RBI base-on-ball.
Ryan Steffensen hit a double with one out for DSU in the bottom sixth inning. Roman hit an RBI double to score Steffensen to trim JC's lead to 3-2. The Trojans were unable to score another run as they left runners on third and first bases.
DSU was unable to score a run in the final inning as they left two runners on base.
Roman had two doubles, a run scored and an RBI for Dakota State. Hershfield and Steffensen each added a double. Ryan Bouricer, Kyle Holland and Colten Thurrott each recorded a single. Holland swiped one base.
Flaten had two doubles and two RBIs for Jamestown. Wilkinson and Strnad each added a single. Matt Boe, Wilkinson, Strnad and Matt Achter each recorded one stolen base.
The Jimmies left nine runners on base. The Trojans had six runners left on base.
Drew Sweeter started the game for DSU. He pitched 2 2/3 innings and allowed one run on three hits. Beau Behrend (1-1) took the loss in relief. He worked for three innings and gave up two runs on two hits. Behrend struck out three JC's batters. Kyle Bradbury came in the sixth inning. JD Farley tossed 1 1/3 shutout innings in relief.
Adam Ranger (4-0) tossed 5 1/3 innings in victory for the Jimmies. He allowed two runs on five hits. He recorded six strikeouts. Nick Smart notched his first save of the season by working 1 2/3 innings in relief. He limited DSU to two hits and struck out three Trojans' batters.
Game 2 – Jamestown (N.D.) 18, Dakota State 6
Jonathan Minchella hit a 2-RBI double with two outs as JC opened with a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Jamestown produced five runs in the top of the third inning, highlighted by Derek Wallace's grand slam to extend Jimmies' lead to 7-0.
The Trojans ended their scoring drought in the bottom of the third frame. Bourcier hit an RBI single to score Steffensen as DSU trimmed their deficit to 7-1.
The Jimmies added a run in the top of the fourth inning by Nico Moreno's RBI double to make it 8-1.
Pinch hitter Kellen Romberger hit a 3-run home run (his first home run of the season) in the bottom of the fifth inning as DSU cut Jimmies' lead to 8-4.
Jamestown pounded for eight runs in the top of the sixth inning to expand their lead to 18-4. The Jimmies added two runs in the final inning.
The Trojans scored twice in the bottom seventh inning to make the game's final score. Sweeter hit a double with one out. Connor Hargrove hit an RBI single to score Sweeter. Hargrove scored by JC's defensive error.
Bourcier went 2-for-2 at the plate with two singles, a run scored and an RBI for DSU. Steffensen, Corey Pasichnyk and Sweeter each had a double. Romberger had three RBIs. Roman and Hargrove each had a single. Steffensen, Chaz Palmer and Hargrove each swiped one base.
Wallace had two grand slams, a double and recorded eight RBIs for Jamestown. Minchella had two doubles. Joe Perez had a double and two singles. Flaten, Kyle Mallory and Boe each had two hits.
The Jimmies outhit the Trojans 18-8 in the game.
DSU left 10 runners on bases. JC had six runners left on base.
Hershfield (3-3) recorded the loss for the Trojans. He tossed 3 2/3 innings and allowed eight runs on eight hits. Hershfield struck out four JC's batters. Seth Rockafellow worked 1 2/3 innings in relief. He gave up three runs on three hits. He recorded three strikeouts. Andy Lee pitched 2/3 innings and allowed five runs on four hits. Kyle Bradbury pitched the final inning and allowed two runs (one unearned) on three hits.
Wesley Hardy (2-1) recorded the victory for Jamestown. He pitched 4 2/3 innings and gave up four runs on six hits. He recorded seven strikeouts. Zach Mendiola and Blake Stewart combined for 1 1/3 shutout innings. Chris Combo worked the final inning of the game and gave up two runs (one unearned) on two hits.
Dakota State looks to rebound back in the winning column on Tuesday evening. The Trojans continue their 12-game home stand as they host in-state rival Mount Marty at Flynn Field. First game of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
