DSU concludes 12-game baseball home stand with sweep over in-state rival Lancers

Anyelo Roman tossed a complete game to help DSU secure a 3-1 game one victory over in-state rival Mount Marty Tuesday night at Flynn Field.MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State concluded their 12-game home stand Tuesday night with a sweep over in-state rival Mount Marty at Flynn Field.  The Trojans broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn a 3-1 game one victory.  DSU used a fast start in the second game to cruise to an 11-2 win to extend Trojans' winning streak to three games.

Dakota State improved their overall record to 18-19 and finished their 12-game home stand with a 7-5 record.  The Trojans are currently 4-0 against teams from South Dakota (DSU swept Dakota Wesleyan to start their 12-game home stand on March 21).  Mount Marty, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, dropped their record to 12-16 and lost their third straight game.

Game 1 – Dakota State 3, Mount Marty 1

Chaz Palmer hit a game-winning 2-RBI double to give Trojans a 3-1 game one win over Mount Marty Tuesday night.Rays Roman reached on base by walk with one out for DSU in the bottom of the first inning.  He swiped to second base.  Anyelo Roman hit an RBI double to score Rays Roman to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth frame, Jared Miller hit a two-out double for the Lancers.  Mathias Godsil hit an RBI double to score Riley Stack (pinch runner for Miller) as Mount Marty tied the game at 1-1.

Ryan Steffensen opened the bottom of the sixth inning with a double down the right-field line for DSU.  With two outs, Max Garza was hit-by-pitch.  Then, Steffensen advanced to third base by a stolen base.  Chaz Palmer hit a 2-RBI double down the right-field line to score Steffensen and Garza as the Trojans grabbed a 3-1 lead.

Dakota State sealed the victory in the final inning as the Lancers left one runner on base.

Rays Roman produced two singles and two stolen bases for DSU.  Palmer had a double and recorded two RBIs.  Steffensen and Anyelo Roman each had a double.  Drew Sweeter tossed six strong innings as the Trojans earned a 11-2 game two victory to sweep Mount Marty Tuesday night.Hershfield recorded a single.  Steffensen and Kyle Braun each swiped one base.

Godsil recorded a double and a single for MMC.  Derrik Nelson, Jason Schmidt, Miller, Mikey Johnson and Kyler Pekarek each had a hit. 

Both teams made a double play in the game and left seven runners on base.

Anyelo Roman (4-3) tossed a complete game victory for DSU.  He allowed one run on seven hits and struck out four batters.

Brian Bartlett started the game for Mount Marty.  He pitched 5 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on five hits.  Josh Homme (0-2) recorded the loss as he gave up one run on one hit.  Derrik Nelson worked 1/3 innings in relief.

Game 2 – Dakota State 11, Mount Marty 2

Dakota State exploded for seven runs in the opening inning to earn a 7-0 lead.  Kyle Holland opened with a double down the left-field line.  Rays Roman hit a single to advanced Holland to third base.  Rays Roman advanced to second base by a stolen base.  Hershfield recorded an RBI ground out to score Holland for the first run of the game. 

The Trojans extended their lead to 2-0 by Steffensen's RBI fielder choice.  Max Garza added a 2-RBi single to score Steffensen and Ryan Bourcier for a 4-0 DSU lead.

DSU made it 5-0 when Palmer hit an RBI fielder's choice to score Corey Pasichnyk (courtesy runner for Garza), where the Lancers could not complete their fielding play at second base.  Holland added a 2-RBI double to expand Trojans' lead to 7-0.

Anyelo Roman hit a solo home run (his ninth home run of the season) in the bottom second frame to give DSU an 8-0 lead.

Mount Marty ended their scoring drought in the top of the third inning by Miller's RBI single to score Justin Kemp.  The Lancers cut their deficit to 8-1.

Holland hit a 2-RBI single in the bottom third frame to extend DSU's lead to 10-1.

MMC's Schmidt recorded a RBI single in the top of the fifth inning to make it 10-2 in favor of the Trojans.

Hershfield hit his second RBI of the game in the bottom fifth inning as DSU sealed the victory.

Holland was 4-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, two singles and produced four RBIs for Dakota State.  Garza added three singles and two RBIs.  Rays Roman recorded two singles.  Anyelo Roman, Steffensen, Bourcier, Braun and Palmer each had a hit.

Jason Livermont had two singles for the Lancers.  Kemp, Nelson, Schmidt, Miller, Allen Hemeyer and Nathan Roche each recorded a single.

DSU swiped five bases in the game – one each from Rays Roman, Steffensen, Palmer, Pasichnyk and Bourcier – compared to MMC one (Nelson).

Drew Sweeter notched his first pitching win for the Trojans.  He pitched six innings and allowed two runs (one unearned) on eight hits.  He recorded three strikeouts.  JD Farley worked in a shutout seventh inning in relief.

Will Ryan (1-2) took the loss for Mount Marty.  He tossed three innings and gave up 10 runs (one uneared) on 10 hits.  Caleb Stanley pitched two innings in relief.  He allowed one run on four hits.  Adam McVay tossed a shutout sixth inning.

Dakota State starts their 12-game stretch on the road this weekend.  The Trojans look to extend their winning streak on Friday as they begin their four-game series with Bellevue (Neb.), receiving votes in the latest NAIA Baseball national poll.  The four-game series is part of the Bellevue IHOP Invitational, which will be held at the Westgate Field in east Omaha, Neb.  The doubleheader kicks off on Friday at 1 p.m.
