Trojans kick off outdoor track and field season Thursday at Dordt

THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University outdoor track and field teams kicks off their outdoor season Thursday afternoon in Sioux Center, Iowa. A total of eight schools are expected to compete in the Dordt Invitational at the Open Space Park Football Field.
DORDT INVITATIONAL: The Dordt Invitational is hosted by Dordt College, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference. Six other GPAC schools – Briar Cliff, Dakota Wesleyan, Northwestern (Iowa), Midland, Morningside and Mount Marty – along with host-team Dordt and DSU, are expected to participate in the meet. The field events start at 4 p.m. with the high jump, shot put, long jump (east pit) and pole vault for the men's, while the women's will have their discus, long jump (west pit) and hammer throw will take place. The first running event is scheduled for 4 p.m. with the women's and men's 4 x 800-meter relay. The final event of the meet is slated to start at 8 p.m. with the women's and men's 4 x 400-meter relay.
PENNING QUALIFIES FOR NATIONALS: Nic Penning recorded a national qualifying time in the Midland Half-Marathon Meet on March 10 in Fremont, Neb. The 13.1 mile meet, hosted by Midland University, gave individuals an opportunity to compete for a bid in marathon for NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championship in late May. Penning punched his ticket for nationals as he recorded a time of one hour, 13 minutes and 56 seconds. He placed fifth. A total of 19 runners placed in the half-marathon event. The NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championship meet will be held in Marion, Ind. on May 24-26.
OUTDOOR TRACK SEASON SCHEDULE: Dakota State will have seven outdoor track and field meets this spring. The Trojans will host their own meet on April 27 at Trojan Field, hosting the Trojan Invitational. DSU will compete in the University of Sioux Falls Invitational on May 4-5 and Concordia Twilight on May 12 for their final two outdoor track meets of the season.

UP NEXT: Dakota State heads to Sioux City, Iowa to compete in the annual premier event, the Sioux City Relays. The event will feature numerous NAIA schools from the Midwest. The meet kicks off on Friday, April 13 and runs through Saturday, April 14.
