DSU competes in Dordt Invitational in season opening outdoor track season

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – The Dakota State University outdoor track and field teams opened their 2012 outdoor schedule Thursday afternoon at Open Space Park Football Field. The Trojans competed in the Dordt Invitational, hosted by Dordt College.
A total of nine schools competed in the meet (Augustana, Briar Cliff, Dakota State, Dakota Wesleyan, Dordt, Midland, Morningside, Northwestern (Iowa) and University of Sioux Falls).
Dakota State dominated the men's 800-meter run. Andy Coy trailed in the race, but rallied back in the final stretch to capture the race with a national qualifying mark time of one minute and 53.93 seconds. Matt Fideler finished third with a time of 1:55.25. Andy Quenzer was 24th (2:03.19) and Gabe Samuelson placed 33rd (2:07.33).
Ryan Gimbel produced his career-best and DSU school record of 140 feet and eight inches for a third-place finish in the men's hammer throw. He broke his previous old school record mark of 113 feet and 10 inches in 2011. Trevor Rossknecht was 11th with a measurement of 102 feet and three inches.
Rossknecht placed eighth in the men's discus throw. He threw a discus with a measurement of 128 feet and two inches. Gimbel was 15th (123 feet and five inches).
Gimbel was 11th in the men's shot put (37 feet and four inches). Rossknecht finished 17th (33 feet and 10.25 inches).
In the men's 5000-meter race, Nic Penning was third with a time of 15:59.87.
Cameron Krump was tied for fifth in the men's high jump. He cleared the height measurement of six feet and 1.25 inches.
In women's throws, Brittany Pearson produced two eighth-place finishes. She threw a measurement of 118 feet and eight inches in the discus throw and 109 feet and one inch in the hammer throw.
In hurdles, Chad Pelkofer ran a time of 59.19 seconds for a seventh-place finish with a time of 59.19 seconds. He was eighth in the 110-meter hurdles in 17.64 seconds.
Nicole Jurrens placed 10th in the women's 400-meter dash with a time of 1:07.81. She was 29th in the 200-meter dash (31.92 seconds).
In the women's 1500-meter run, Amber Wiebenga finished 19th in 5:58.92.
Chance Clason was 22nd in the men's 100-meter dash with a time of 11.93 seconds.
In the men's 200-meter race, Andrew Gross placed 19th in 24.68 seconds, while Clason was 21st (25.27 seconds).
Dakota State returns back to action next weekend. The Trojans compete in the annual premier two-day event – the Sioux City Relays. The meet kicks off on Friday, April 13 and continues through Saturday, April 14 in Sioux City, Iowa.
