Dakota State and Bellevue (Neb.) split baseball doubleheader Friday

OMAHA, Neb. – Dakota State kicks off their 12-game stretch on the road Friday afternoon at the Westgate Field, visiting Bellevue (Neb.) as part of Bellevue IHOP Invitational. The Bruins, a member of the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference, won the first game 5-1. DSU jumped to a 5-0 lead in the second game and held on to a 5-4 victory to earn a doubleheader split with the Bruins.
Dakota State won their third game in the last four games to improve their overall record to 19-20. Bellevue, receiving votes to the latest NAIA Baseball national poll, dropped to 24-13 after the second game loss.
Game 1 – Bellevue (Neb.) 5, Dakota State 1
The Bruins opened the nine-inning game with a run scored in the bottom first inning. Dusty Kerns recorded an RBI base-on-balls with two outs for a 1-0 BU lead.
Bellevue extended their lead to 3-0 with two runs scored in the bottom second frame. The Bruins recorded four singles in the inning. Spencer Duggan and Brandon Thompson each had an RBI.
Tanner Moore hit an RBI double to score Duggan to give the Bruins a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
BU made it 5-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning by Kerns' RBI sacrifice fly to score Bradley Reeves.
The Trojans ended their scoring drought in the top of the ninth inning. Kyle Holland opened with a single. Corey Pasichnyk (courtesy runner for Holland) advanced to second by BU's wild pitch. Jason Hershfield hit a single to advance Pasichnyk to third base. Anyelo Roman recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Pasichnyk to trim Bruins' lead to 5-1.
DSU was unable to complete their rally as BU sealed the victory. The Trojans left one runner on base when the game was over.
Hershfield was 2-for-4 at the plate with two singles for Dakota State. Holland, Rays Roman and Ryan Bourcier each added a single.
Moore had a double for Bellevue. Kerns recorded two RBIs. Thompson had two hits. Tylor Pavel, Duggan, Ryan Knutz and Kelvin Nelson each had a single.
Josh Caven (2-1) took the loss for DSU. He tossed four innings and gave up four runs (one unearned) on six hits. JD Farley worked three innings in relief. He allowed one run on one hit.
Kody McFarland (7-2) pitched a complete game victory for the Bruins. He limited DSU to one run on five hits. McFarland struck out seven DSU's batters.
Game 2 – Dakota State 5, Bellevue (Neb.) 4
Dakota State exploded for three runs in the top of the first inning of the second game (seven inning game). Holland started the game with a walk. Hershfield added a walk with one out and advanced Holland to second base. Anyelo Roman hit an RBI single to score Holland for DSU's first run of the game. Bourcier added an RBI single to score Hershfield. Anyelo Roman added a run caused by BU's defensive miscue to give DSU a 3-0 lead.
The Trojans added two runs in the top of the second frame to extend their lead. Holland hit an RBI single and Rays Roman added an RBI sacrifice fly as DSU expand their lead to 5-0.
Sean Mattson hit a 2-RBI triple in the bottom of the fifth inning as Bellevue trimmed DSU's lead to 5-2.
The Bruins tried to mount a comeback in the final inning. Pavel hit an RBI single and Duggan added an RBI ground out to trim their deficit to 5-4. The Trojans secured the victory as Moore was struck out swinging with two runners left on base.
Holland and Anyelo Roman each had two singles and an RBI for Dakota State. Rays Roman and Bourcier each recorded a single and an RBI. Seth Doxey added a single.
Mattson recorded a triple, a single and two RBIs for the Bruins. Thompson had a double. Pavel and Duggan each had a single and an RBI. Moore and Knutz each hit a single.
Doxey (4-3) notched the victory for the Trojans. He tossed 6 1/3 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits. Doxey recorded six strikeouts. Hershfield got his sixth save of the season as he worked 2/3 innings in relief. He limited BU to one hit.
Eric Locke (2-2) worked the first 1 1/3 innings in loss for Bellevue. He gave up five runs (one unearned) on four hits. Bradley Reeves pitched 5 2/3 innings in relief. He held the Trojans to three hits.
Dakota State and Bellevue will complete their four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader. First game is set for 1 p.m. at the Westgate Field in Omaha, Neb. There will be a live audio available on http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/bellevue.portal.
