Dakota State sweeps baseball season series with Mount Marty

YANKTON, S.D. – Dakota State continued their busy baseball schedule Monday evening at Riverside Field. The Trojans visited their in-state rival Mount Marty, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). DSU completed their season series sweep (4 games) over the Lancers with 8-2 and 5-2 victories and surpassed 20 wins this season.
Dakota State improved their overall record to 21-22 and remained undefeated in six games (6-0) versus teams from South Dakota (the Trojans swept the Lancers on April 3 and Dakota Wesleyan on March 21 at Flynn Field). Mount Marty dropped their overall record to 14-20.
Game 1 – Dakota State 8, Mount Marty 2
Dakota State hit back-to-back solo home runs by Anyelo Roman and Ryan Steffensen to give DSU a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Anyelo Roman hit a double with one out in the top fourth frame for DSU. He advanced to third base by MMC's balk. Steffensen recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Anyelo Roman to extend Trojans' lead to 3-0.
DSU added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning as their lead grew to 5-0. Steffensen hit his third RBI of the game to score Anyelo Roman. Ryan Bourcier hit an RBI double to score Steffensen as the Trojans earn a five-run lead.
DSU's pinch hitter Seth Doxey (for Chaz Palmer) opened with a double to deep left field to open the top of the seventh inning. Rays Roman hit a 2-run home run (his second home run of the season) and scored Palmer as DSU expanded their lead to 7-0. Anyelo Roman hit a solo home run to make it 8-0 in favor of the Trojans.
The Lancers scored two runs caused by DSU's defensive miscue in the bottom of the seventh inning. DSU secured their 20th victory of the season.
The Trojans recorded four home runs in the game - two by Anyelo Roman and one each by Rays Roman and Steffensen. DSU added three doubles – one each by Anyelo Roman, Doxey and Bourcier.
DSU's Anyelo Roman had four runs scored in the game and produced two RBIs. Steffensen added three RBIs and swiped two bases. Jason Hershfield and Max Garza each had a single.
Justin Kemp and Derrik Nelson each had two singles for Mount Marty. Mathias Godsil had a double. Nathan Roche and Kyler Pekarek each recorded a hit.
The Trojans committed six errors in the game.
Brandon Womack (5-2) tossed a complete game victory for the Trojans. He allowed two unearned runs on seven hits.
Josh Cleveland (0-1) took the loss for Mount Marty. He pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up five runs on eight hits. Jake Broscha worked 1 2/3 innings in relief. He allowed three runs on three hits.
Game 2 – Dakota State 5, Mount Marty 2
Jason Schmidt hit a solo home run with two outs as the Lancers gained a 1-0 early lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Anyelo Roman recorded a solo home run (his 13th home run of the season and broke a new DSU record book for most home runs in a single season) as DSU evened the game at 1-1 in the top of the third frame.
The Lancers regained their lead with one run scored in the bottom of the third inning. Jared Miller hit an RBI single as MMC earned a 2-1 lead.
The Trojans answered back in the top fourth frame to tie the game for the second time. Garza hit a two-out double and advanced to third base by Lancers' defensive error by right fielder's wild throw. Palmer reached on base by a walk. Kyle Holland hit an RBI single to score Kyle Braun (courtesy runner for Garza) to tie the game at 2-2.
Hershfield hit a 3-run home run (and tied the DSU school record book with Anyelo Roman for most home runs in a single season with 13 home runs) in the top of the fifth inning as DSU grabbed their first lead of the game at 5-2.
The Trojans secured the victory as the Lancers left one runner on base in the final inning.
Anyelo Roman, Steffensen and Garza each had two hits for Dakota State. Hershfield produced three RBIs. Holland, Bourcier and Doxey each had a single.
Nelson, Miller, Godsil and Allen Hemeyer each had a single for the Lancers. Schmidt had a home run.
DSU outhit MMC 10-5 in the game.
Hershfield (4-3) pitched a complete game victory for the Trojans. He limited the Lancers to two runs on five hits. Hershfield recorded a season-high 13 strikeouts.
Brian Bartlett (2-4) tossed five innings in loss for MMC. He allowed five runs on nine hits. Schmidt pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief and limited DSU to one hit before being ejected in the top of the seventh inning. He struck out four DSU batters. Josh Homme worked for 1/3 inning in relief.
Dakota State, currently 8-2 record against members of the GPAC, will visit another opponent from the GPAC on Wednesday afternoon. The Trojans travel to Sioux City, Iowa to take on Briar Cliff in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at the Bishop Muller Field.
