Dakota State had stellar performances in first day of Sioux City Relays track

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Numerous colleges and universities (NAIA and NCAA levels) from the Midwest region attended the annual two-day Sioux City Relays at Olsen Stadium. The Trojans had stellar performances in the first day Friday, which highlighted two Trojan runners capturing runner-up honors and a thrower setting a new DSU school record.
Andy Coy improved his national qualifying mark of one minute and 52.27 seconds for a second-place finish in the men's 800-meter run. He was the top NAIA place finisher in the event, which was won by NCAA Division II Augustana's runner Aduo Omot.
Nic Penning produced a second-place finish in the men's 10,000-meter run with a time of 33:57.57.
Ryan Gimbel continued to extend his new career-best and DSU school record in the men's hammer throw. He recorded a new record of 142 feet for a sixth-place finish. Gimbel's previous record was set at the Dordt Invitational on April 5 with a measurement of 140 feet and eight inches. He placed 12th in the shot put (41 feet and 8.75 inches).
Trojan men's distance medley relay team (John Bintliff, Stacey Bery, Andy Quenzer and Matt Fideler) placed fourth with a time of 10:30.15, which is the fourth fastest time in DSU record book.
In the women's 800-meter race, Stephanie Uher finished with a time of 2:19.74 with a tenth-place finish. Her time is the fifth fastest time in the DSU record book.
Other place finishers at the Sioux City Relays are: Claire Beck (15th in women's 400-meter dash – 1:03.26); Stephanie Warnke (25th in women's 800-meter run – 2:26.26); Amber Wiebenga (54th in women's 800-meter run – 2:52.34); Sara Schultz (55th in women's 800-meter run – 2:59.27); Summer Bronson (14th in women's 100-meter hurdles – 16.39 seconds); Shayna Dwyer (18th in women's discus throw – 101 feet and two inches); Chance Clason (42nd in men's 100-meter dash – 12.44 seconds); Gabe Samuelson (24th in men's 400-meter dash – 54.12 seconds); Andrew Gross (27th in men's 400-meter dash – 54.72 seconds); Joshua Scott (71st in men's 800-meter run – 2:14.37) and Chad Pelkofer (28th in men's 110-meter hurdles – 17.83 seconds and 20th in men's 400-meter hurdles – 58.85 seconds).
The Sioux City Relays concludes on Saturday.
