DWU sweeps Trojans in softball action at McWhirter Field

MITCHELL, S.D. – Dakota State softball team traveled to McWhirter Field to face their in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan Saturday afternoon. The Tigers swept the Trojans by the scores of 4-2 and 7-3.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 12-17. Dakota Wesleyan, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, won their fourth straight games to raise their overall record to 10-21.
Game 1 – Dakota Wesleyan 4, Dakota State 2
Dakota State gained its first lead of the game in the top of the first inning. Renaye Gamson opened the game with a walk. She swiped to second base. Leslie Neiman hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Gamson to third base. Brittany Hill recorded an RBI double to score Gamson as the Trojans earned a 1-0 lead.
DWU tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom second frame caused by DSU's defensive miscue.
The Tigers scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning break a 1-1 tie into a 4-1 lead.
Hill opened the top seventh frame with a double for the Trojans. Jessica McLane hit an RBI single to score Hill to trim DSU's deficit to 4-2. DSU was unable to complete the rally as they left one runner on base when the game ended.
Hill had two doubles, a run scored and an RBI for Dakota State. McLane added two singles and an RBI. Emily Kulp recorded a single.
Chelsea Moody had a double for DWU. Nicole Haley and Devinne Facile each had two singles. Roni Nekrassoff and Megan Courtois each had a single and an RBI.
Taylor Mackey took the loss on the mound for the Trojans. She tossed six innings and allowed four runs (two unearned) on eight hits.
Brandi Nekrassoff pitched a complete game victory for the Tigers. She limited DSU to two runs on five hits.
Game 2 – Dakota Wesleyan 7, Dakota State 3
Courtois hit an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning as DWU grabbed a 1-0 early lead.
The Trojans produced two runs in the top fourth frame to gain their first lead of the game. Kulp recorded an RBI double to score Mackey to tie the game at 1-1. Alisa Balesteri added an RBI single to score Kulp to earn a 2-1 lead.
DWU scored once in the bottom fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2, caused by Trojans' defensive error.
Hill hit an RBI single to score Gamson in the top fifth inning as the Trojans regained their lead at 3-2.
The Tigers produced four runs in the bottom fifth frame to overtake the lead from DSU 6-3.
DWU added a run in the bottom sixth inning to extend their lead to 7-3.
The Trojans was unable to score in the final inning as the Tigers secured the win.
Kulp had a double, a single and an RBI for DSU. Gamson added two singles. Neiman, Mackey, Balesteri, Brittany Tebbe and Lexy Miller each recorded a single.
Facile had a double and two runs scored for Dakota Wesleyan. Brandi Nekrassoff recorded two singles and two RBIs. Courtois added two singles and two runs scored. Katie Anderus had two singles.
The Trojans outhit the Tigers 10-8 in the game.
DSU committed four errors in the game compared to DWU two errors.
Dakota Wesleyan left nine runners on base. The Trojans had eight runners left on base.
Balesteri started the game for Dakota State. She pitched the first inning and allowed one run on three hits. Mackey (6-12) recorded the loss as she tossed five innings in relief. She gave up six runs (three unearned) on five hits.
Brandi Nekrassoff (9-10) pitched a complete game win for the Tigers. She gave up three runs on 10 hits.
Dakota State and Dakota Wesleyan will meet again on Wednesday for another doubleheader at McWhirter Field. First game of the doubleheader is set for 5 p.m. in Mitchell, S.D.
