Trojans split baseball doubleheader with NCAA Division II University of Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – University of Sioux Falls, a member of NCAA Division II, handed Dakota State's baseball team its first loss versus South Dakota teams Wednesday evening with a 6-4 game one victory at Harmodon Park. The Trojans bounced back and shut down the Cougars in the second game 6-0 to earn a doubleheader split.
Dakota State is currently 23-24 overall record after the victory in the second game. The Trojans are 7-1 against teams from South Dakota. USF dropped to 9-25.
Game 1 – University of Sioux Falls 6, Dakota State 4
USF scored its first run of the game in the bottom first inning by Keith Cutler's RBI fielder choice when the Trojans were unable to record an out at the home plate during the play. Damian Kardas added an RBI single to score Jimmy Maxwell to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom second frame, USF added a run by Maxwell's RBI single to extend their lead to 3-0.
Dakota State answered back in the top third inning with three runs scored. With bases loaded and one out situation for the Trojans, Anyelo Roman was hit-by-pitch and allowed Kyle Braun to scored DSU's first run of the game. Jason Hershfield added a 2-RBI single to score Kyle Holland and Chaz Palmer as DSU tied the game at 3-3.
The Cougars regained their lead at 4-3 in the bottom third frame by Zach Ireland's RBI single to score Kardas.
DSU tied the game for the second time in the top of the fifth inning. Anyelo Roman hit an RBI ground out to score Holland as the Trojans knotted the game at 4-4.
USF scored twice with two outs in the sixth inning by Cutler's 2-RBI double as the Cougars gained a 6-4 lead.
The Trojans were unable to convert their scoring opportunities in the final inning as they left two runners on base.
Anyelo Roman had two singles and two RBIs for DSU. Hershfield added a single and produced two RBIs. Ryan Bourcier had two singles. Braun recorded a single and a run scored. Holland scored twice and swiped one base.
Cutler was 3-for-4 with a double, two singles and three RBIs for the Cougars. Austin Goodenow, Maxwell, Kardas and Ireland each had two hits.
Both teams left six runners on base in the game.
USF outhit the Trojans 12-6.
Brandon Womack started on the mound for the Trojans. He tossed five innings and allowed four runs on 11 hits. Hershfield recorded the loss as he pitched in the sixth inning. He gave up two runs on one hit and struck out two USF's batters.
Brady Nolz started the game for the Cougars. He worked for five innings and gave up four runs on four hits. Andrew Christensen (2-2) picked up the win as he pitched one-hitter in the sixth inning. Chris Nichols recorded his second save of the season as he closed the game in the seventh inning.
Game 2 – Dakota State 6, University of Sioux Falls 0
DSU gained their first lead of the game in the top of the second inning. Braun hit an RBI ground out to score Ryan Steffensen to give DSU a 1-0 lead.
The Trojans opened the third inning with three straight singles from Palmer, Holland and Rays Roman. Rays Roman hit an RBI single to score Palmer to extend DSU's lead to 2-0. Anyelo Roman hit a 2-RBI sacrifice fly to score Holland and Rays Roman to make it 4-0 in favor of DSU.
Dakota State added two more runs in the fifth inning by Anyelo Roman's 2-RBI single to score Holland and Rays Roman.
DSU sealed the victory as USF was limited to four hits in the game.
Anyelo Roman produced a single and four RBIs for the Trojans. Holland and Rays Roman each had two singles and two runs scored. Holland swiped one base. Bourcier and Palmer each added a single.
Maxwell had two singles for the Cougars. Anthony Williams and Ireland each added a single.
Hershfield (5-4) tossed a complete game win for DSU. He limited the Cougars to four hits and recorded ten strikeouts in the game.
Eric Brothers (1-4) took the loss for USF. He pitched six innings and allowed six runs on seven hits. Brothers struck out five DSU's batters. James Rader pitched a shutout seventh inning in relief.
Dakota State continues their action on the road Thursday evening. The Trojans will visit their in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan in a doubleheader. First game is set for 5 p.m. at Caldwell Park in Mitchell, S.D.
