Trojans pound Dordt (Iowa) in DSU’s baseball season home finale at Flynn Field

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State recorded a combined 31 runs and 35 hits Tuesday evening to sweep Dordt (Iowa) 16-5 and 15-6 at Flynn Field. The Trojans scored at least one run in nine straight innings until the fourth inning of the second game. DSU won their third straight game before heading into the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Baseball Postseason Tournament, which starts next week in San Marcos, Calif.
Dakota State finished their regular-season one game above .500 at 25-24 overall record before heading into the postseason play. Dordt, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, suffered their fourth straight loss and dropped their overall record to 13-27.
It was the final home collegiate baseball games at Flynn Field for four DSU seniors – Seth Doxey, Max Garza, Jason Hershfield and Brandon Womack.
Game 1 – Dakota State 16, Dordt (Iowa) 5
Anyelo Roman hit a 2-run home run in the opening inning to give DSU a 2-0.
Dordt answered with two runs in the top second frame. Eric Torgerson hit a RBI single and Ryan Bridgewater added an RBI sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2.
DSU's Chaz Palmer hit an RBI double to score Max Garza to break the 2-2 tie into a 3-2 lead in the bottom third inning. Kyle Holland added an RBI double to score Palmer and Rays Roman hit an RBI single to score Holland to give the Trojans a 5-3 lead.
Dakota State exploded for five runs in the bottom third inning to widen their lead. The Trojans recorded two doubles from Palmer and Holland, Rays Roman added a triple and Anyelo Roman hit a 2-run home run to give DSU a 10-3 lead.
Anyelo Roman extended the DSU school record for most home runs in a single season with 16 home runs.
DSU added two more runs in the bottom fourth frame to make it 12-3. Colten Thurrott and Anyelo Roman each recorded an RBI single.
Ryan Steffensen hit a solo home run in the fifth inning to expand DSU's lead to 13-3. Palmer added an RBI single to score Andy Lee (pinch runner for Max Garza) and Drew Sweeter hit an RBI single to score Braun to make it 15-3 in favor of the Trojans.
Dordt hit a solo home run from Eric Anderson in the top of the sixth inning to trim DSU's lead to 15-4.
Thurrott recorded an RBI single to score Ryan Bourcier to give DSU a 16-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Defenders scored twice in the top of the seventh inning, but the Trojans sealed the victory.
Anyelo Roman was 3-for-4 at the plate with two home runs, a single and produced five RBIs for the Trojans. Palmer added two doubles, two singles, two runs scored and two RBIs. Holland had two doubles, two runs scored and recorded three RBIs. Rays Roman added a triple, a single and swiped two bases. Braun had a double. Thurrott recorded two singles and two RBIs. Sweeter had two singles and an RBI. Steffensen had two singles. Hershfield, Bourcier and Garza each had one hit.
Anderson had three hits, two runs scored and an RBI for Dordt. Nick Serrato and Torgerson each had two hits. Nathan Fraley had a triple. Travis Dekkers and Jason Wapnick each had a single.
The Trojans pound 21 hits in the game compared to the Defenders' 10.
Doxey started the game for DSU. He worked for the first three innings and gave up two runs on four hits. Josh Caven (3-1) recorded the win as he pitched three innings in relief. He allowed one run on four hits. JD Farley tossed the seventh inning and gave up two runs on two hits.
The Defenders used three pitchers with each pitcher working for two innings. Jeremy Engbers (0-1) took the loss for Dordt. He allowed five runs on five hits. Ryan Baas pitched the third and fourth innings and gave up seven runs (two unearned) on nine hits. Josh VanKekerix pitched the final inning and allowed four runs on seven hits.
Game 2 – Dakota State 15, Dordt (Iowa) 6
Anyelo Roman hit an RBI single to score Holland as DSU earned their first lead of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Hershfield added an RBI sacrifice fly to score Braun as DSU grabbed a 2-0 early lead.
The Trojans put together five runs in the bottom second inning to extend their lead. The Trojans recorded four consecutive singles from Corey Pasichnyk, Palmer, Holland and Garza to produce two runs. Bourcier added an RBI double to score Braun and Hershfield scored by DC's wild pitch to give DSU a 7-0 lead.
Dekkers hit a 3-run home run in the top third frame as the Defenders cut their deficit to 7-3.
Garza hit a 2-RBI double to score Palmer and Holland in the bottom third inning to make it 9-3 in favor of DSU. The Trojans added two runs caused from DC's defensive error to expand DSU's lead to 11-3.
Aaron Parks hit an RBI double in the top of the fifth inning and Zach Staudt hit a 2-RBI single as the Defenders trimmed their deficit to 11-6.
Dakota State answered back with three runs scored in the bottom fifth frame. Evan Tufvesson recorded a 2-RBI single to score Hershfield and Doxey. Pasichnyk added a run caused by the Defenders' defensive error to give DSU a 14-6 lead.
The Trojans added a run in the bottom sixth inning by Doxey's RBI walk to score Braun.
Garza was 2-for-2 at the plate with a double and recorded four RBIs for Dakota State. Holland added three singles, three runs scored and swiped two bases. Braun scored four times in the game. Hershfield recorded a double, a single and scored twice. Bourcier had a double. Thurrott, Anyelo Roman, Steffensen, Pasichnyk, Palmer and Tufvesson each had one hit in the game.
Dekkers had a home run and three RBIs for Dordt. Parks added a double a single. Alex Bluhm, Fraley and Staudt each had one hit.
Dakota State outhit Dordt 14-6 in the game.
Womack started on the mound for DSU. He worked the first three innings and gave up three runs (one unearned) on two hits. Womack struck out three DC's batters. Sweeter (3-1) notched the win as he pitched one-hitter in the fourth inning. Kyle Bradbury tossed the fifth inning and allowed three runs on three hits. Seth Rockafellow and Hershfield each pitched one shutout inning in relief. Hershfield recorded two strikeouts.
Mark Nyhoff (1-5) recorded the loss for the Defenders. He tossed one-plus innings and allowed six runs on seven hits. Ryan De Wit worked three innings in relief. He gave up five runs (two unearned) on four hits. John Drenten pitched the final two innings. He allowed four runs (one unearned) on three hits.
Dakota State heads to San Marcos, Calif. on Wednesday, May 2 to play in the opening round of the A.I.I. Baseball Postseason Tournament, hosted by Cal State San Marcos. The sixth-seed Trojans will face the top-seed and defending champions Cal State San Marcos. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. (Central Time)/12:30 p.m. (Pacific Time) at CSUSM Baseball Field.
