DSU prepares for home meet Friday; four Trojan athletes compete at Drake Relays

THIS WEEK: The majority of the Dakota State University outdoor track and field teams will prepare for their annual home meet – the DSU Invitational – on Friday afternoon at Trojan Field. The first event is slated to start at 12 noon. The Trojans will be sending four student-athletes to the annual premier event in the Drake Relays Saturday morning in Des Moines, Iowa at Drake Stadium.
DSU INVITATIONAL: Dakota State hosts its annual home event at Trojan Field on Friday. The first event is expected to start at 12 noon with the men's hammer throw, women's discus throw, women's/men's pole vault, women's/men's high jump and women's/men's long jump. The running events are slated to start at 12:30 p.m. with the women's and men's 3000-meter steeplechase. The last event of the DSU Invitational is the women's and men's 4 x 400-meter relay at approximately 3:50 p.m.
DRAKE RELAYS: Four Trojans will participate in the annual Drake Relays on Saturday morning, which feature numerous schools and quality student-athletes from NCAA and NAIA levels. DSU will run in the men's medley relay college division, which consisted of Andy Coy, Stacey Berg, Andy Quenzer and Matt Fideler. The relay team is schedule to run at 9:10 a.m. Fideler will also run in the 3000-meter steeplechase on Saturday morning at 11:25 p.m.
LAST MEET: Dakota State recorded nine top-8 place finishers in the Red Raiders Open on April 20-21 in Orange City, Iowa at the De Valois Stadium. Dakota State dominated the men's 1500-meter run with top-2 place finishers. Andy Coy captured the title with a national qualifying time of three minutes and 56.55 seconds. Matt Fideler was second in 3:57.53. Stephanie Uher recorded a time of 2:20.82 for a third-place finish in the women's 800-meter run. Ryan Gimbel was fourth in the men's weight throw with a measurement of 137 feet and nine inches. Summer Bronson produced a time of 15.76 seconds for a fifth-place finish in the women's 100-meter hurdles. She was seventh in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:13.33. Andrew Gross placed sixth in the men's pole vault (12 feet and 3.5 inches). Shayna Dwyer finished eighth in the women's discus throw with a measurement of 102 feet and eight inches.
NATIONAL QUALIFIERS: DSU currently have three distance runners qualified for NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championship. Nic Penning recorded a national qualifying time in the Midland Half-Marathon Meet on March 10 in Fremont, Neb. The 13.1 mile meet, hosted by Midland University, gave individuals an opportunity to compete for a bid in marathon for NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championship in late May. Penning punched his ticket for nationals as he recorded a time of one hour, 13 minutes and 56 seconds. Andy Coy improved his national qualifying time of 1:52.27 in the men's 800-meter run and a second-place finish in the Sioux City Relays on April 13. He also qualified for the men's 1500-meter run on April 21 with a time of 3:56.55. Matt Fideler broke a new DSU school record in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase with a national qualifying time of 9:14.66. The NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championship meet will be held in Marion, Ind. on May 24-26.
