Trojans land three on A.I.I. Baseball All-Conference teams

MADISON, S.D. – The Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) has announced its baseball All-Conference teams, announced Friday morning. Three athletes from Dakota State University's baseball team were selected on the All-Conference teams list.
Jason Hershfield and Anyelo Roman each received A.I.I. All-Conference Baseball First Team honor. Max Garza was selected to the A.I.I. All-Conference Second Team.
Hershfield was named to First-Team All-Conference in relief pitcher position. In 19 pitching appearances (started nine games) during the 2012 season, he recorded an earned run average (ERA) of 3.01 along with an overall pitching record of 6-4 with seven saves (20th in the nation in total saves as of May 12).
Hershfield threw a total of 68 2/3 innings and allowed 31 runs (eight unearned) on 62 hits. He amassed 80 strikeouts (10.49 strikeouts per nine innings), which is the second most strikeouts in a season in the DSU school record book. In addition, he tied the Trojan school record for recording two shutouts.
Offensively, Hershfield had 13 doubles and 13 home runs (14th in the nation) during the season. He is second in the DSU school record book for most home runs in a single season.
Jason is the son of Randy and Cheryl Hershfield of San Jose, Calif. He is a senior Physical Education major at Dakota State University.
Anyelo Roman was selected to the First-Team All-Conference for the position of infielder. He had recorded numerous DSU school records this season for the Trojans. Roman broke DSU school records in a single season for most hits (70), runs batted in (55) and most home runs (17). He is third in the record book for most doubles in a single season with 15.
Roman led the team in batting average of .366 in 191 at-bats this season. He recorded a slugging percentage of .723 and swiped 10 bases. According to the NAIA-DakStats statistical website as of May 12, Roman ranks fifth in the nation in home runs, 11th in slugging percentage and 33rd in RBIs. He produced a 5-5 record as a pitcher for the Trojans.
Anyelo is the son of Manuel and Ramona Roman of Lowell, Mass. He is a junior at DSU.
Max Garza was named to Second-Team All-Conference catcher. In 51 games this season for the Trojans, he recorded a batting average of .295 and a slugging percentage of .369. Garza had 36 hits, including six doubles and a home run, in 122 at-bats.
Max is the son of Joe and Sharon Garza of Reno, Nev. He is a senior Exercise Science major at Dakota State University.
Dakota State finished their successful 2012 campaign with an overall record of 28-28, which included a runner-up honor in the first-ever A.I.I. Baseball Postseason Tournament and a debut in the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round in program history.
