Trojan Baseball shatters school records
May 22, 2012
MADISON, S.D. – Seven different Dakota State University baseball student-athletes had been listed in the DSU Baseball Record book during the 2012 campaign. They were also integral members of the team that made a postseason run, which included a runner-up honor in the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference tournament and a first-ever appearance in the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round with an overall record of 28-28.
Anyelo Roman, first-team A.I.I. All-Conference selection, is listed in nine different categories in the DSU record book.
He broke school records in five different categories in a single season – 191 at-bats (previously set by Greg Biagi in 2007 with 185 at-bats), 70 hits (Biagi in 2007 with 66), 138 total bases (Ryan Holthaus in 2003 with 104 total bases), 17 home runs (Josh Tiede in 2010 and Evan Hogan in 2003 each with 10 home runs) and 55 runs batted in (Biagi in 2007 with 53 RBIs).
Anyelo Roman is second in the career DSU school record for most home runs with 17. Shea Tonkin currently holds the career record of 18 home runs from 2005 to 2007.
Four different players tied the DSU school record for games played in a single season with Travis Phelps in 2003. Anyelo Roman, Jason Hershfield, Kyle Holland and Chaz Palmer each played 56 games during the 2012 season.
Hershfield is second in the DSU school record for most home runs in a single season with 13 home runs. In pitching, he recorded the second most strikeouts in a single season with 80 (Jared Donahue currently holds the DSU school record for most strikeouts in a single season with 97 in 2010). Hershfield pitched two shutout games, which is tied for second most shutouts games in a single season and career in DSU school record book.
Other records that are listed in the DSU record book in a single season are:
- Anyelo Roman – 2nd in most runs scored (48), 3rd in most doubles (15)
- Ryan Steffensen – 3rd in most at-bats (177)
- Rays Roman – 4th in most at-bats (176)
- Ryan Bourcier – 4th (tie) in most doubles (14)
