MADISON, S.D. – Several returning Trojan baseball players had successful summer seasons in 2012 and six new faces shined as well, participating in American Legion post-season tournaments. Outside of South Dakota, Rays and Anyelo Roman played in the Futures Collegiate League, an East Coast League made up primarily of NCAA Division I players.
Rays was with the league champion Nashua Silver Knights, batting .280 with 61 runs produced in 51 games. With the Seacoast Mavericks, Anyelo hit .296, finishing second in the league in home runs with 10 and fourth in RBI with 38 in 47 games. Kyle Holland also went back to the East Coast for the summer, batting .314 for the Mystic Schooners in the North East Collegiate Baseball League.
Back in South Dakota, four players qualified to play in the South Dakota Amateur State Tournament: Ryan Bourcier (Colman), Chaz Palmer (Renner), Drew Sweeter (Lennox) and Kyle Braun (Britton). J.D. Farley finished his American Legion eligibility this summer with Winner and batted .375 in the Class B State Tournament.
Riley Bullington of the Class 'A' American Legion State Champion Brookings Bandits advanced to the Great Plains Regional before the team ended one of the most successful baseball campaigns in program history. Bullington went 6-15 (.400) in the three regional games for the Bandits.
Two more state champions join the Trojans this fall, this time from the Class 'B' ranks. Arriving from the Groton American Legion program will be Class 'B' American Legion Player of the Year Jamie Jorgensen. During the Class 'B' Tournament, Jorgensen went 3-0 on the mound, logging 19 tournament innings and striking out 17 batters. Jorgensen batted .280 on the season. Groton teammate Kalen Kjellsen was one hit short of the state tournament batting title, going 11-of-23 for a .478 average, scoring eight times and driving in 10 runs in the six games Groton played.
Also playing in the Class 'B' Tournament were three more individuals from the 2013 DSU recruiting list. Jon Forster and Greg Melbrech, both of Salem, and Matt Stephan from Milbank wrapped up successful summers, ending their seasons at the 'B' Tournament while Groton advanced to Wahpeton, N.D. to play in the Central Plains Tournament.
