DSU volleyball looks to make it two straight wins tonight at Mount Marty

THIS WEEK: Dakota State (1-4 overall record) looks to make it two straight wins tonight (Tuesday) as they travel to Mount Marty (1-4). The Trojans had won the last six meetings with the Lancers. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. at the Cimpl Arena in Yankton, S.D.
LAST MEETING: DSU swept the season series with Mount Marty last season. Both teams met at the DSU Fieldhouse on Sept. 7, 2011 where the Trojans swept the Lancers in three straight sets by the scores of 27-25, 25-25 and 25-23. On Sept. 20, 2011, Dakota State rallied back from 0-2 match deficit and defeated Mount Marty in a five-set thriller. The Trojans won by the score of 17-25, 19-25, 25-15, 25-17 and 15-10. Kristen DiPaola had a record-breaking performance as she recorded a DSU school record of 31 kills – the most kills in a single match.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State hosted a triangular on Sept. 1 with Waldorf (Iowa) and Peru State (Neb.). The Trojans dropped a five-set thriller with the Warriors by the score of 25-23, 24-26, 19-25, 25-21 and 15-8. DSU bounced back in the night cap to record their first win of the season by defeating Peru State – 25-21, 22-25, 25-20, 20-25 and 17-15. Mount Marty went winless in the Labor Day Classic at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D. The Lancers lost to Mayville State (N.D.) (25-18, 25-13, 25-15), York (Neb.) (18-25, 25-23, 25-23, 21-25, 16-14), University of Sioux Falls (S.D.) (25-23, 25-18, 25-18) and Jamestown (N.D.) (25-10, 25-15, 25-20). Mount Marty won the season opener on the road in Omaha, Neb., defeating Grace in four sets (20-25, 25-18, 25-17 and 27-25).
GOING TO THE DISTANCE: The Trojans had gone to the distance (five sets) in three of the first five matches of the season. Dakota State dropped to Briar Cliff (Iowa) and Waldorf (Iowa) in five-set thriller before recording their first win in five sets on Sept. 1 versus Peru State (Neb.).
INDEPENDENT RANKINGS: The first volleyball independent weekly poll had been released on Sept. 3. Dakota State is currently ranked sixth in the poll. The poll is used to determine the qualifying teams to the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference tournament in Mayville, N.D. on Nov. 9-10. The rankings are: (1) Cal State San Marcos (11-2 overall record); (2) La Sierra (Calif.) (9-3); (3) Jamestown (N.D.) (8-2); (4) Mayville State (N.D.) (9-1); (5) Ashford (Iowa) (5-4); (6) Dakota State (S.D.) (1-4); (7) Valley City State (N.D.) (1-6); (8) Johnson & Wales (Colo.) (2-3); (9) Rochester (Mich.) (2-7); (10) Indiana Northwest (0-7) and (11) Walla Walla (Wash.) 0-3.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: According to the DakStats-NAIA statistical website as of Sept. 4, Dakota State ranks 23rd in the nation in digs per game (17.5). Kristen DiPaola is 12th in the nation in kills per game (4.0). Katie Green records 5.1 digs per set, which is 33rd in the nation.
DSU QUICK LEADERS: Kristen DiPaola leads the Trojans' offense attack with 88 kills (4.0 kills per set), which also leads the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference. Stacey Schuller produces 186 set assists (8.5 assists per set). Katie Green records 112 digs (5.1 digs per set). Mandi Atkins have five service aces this season (0.2 aces per set). Taylor Mosco amasses 15 total blocks this season (0.7 blocks per set).
INDEPENDENT VOLLEYBALL JAMBOREE: Six independent schools will play in the Independent Volleyball Jamboree at DSU Fieldhouse on the weekend of Sept. 21-22. Teams included in the jamboree are host-team Dakota State, Ashford (Iowa), Jamestown (N.D.), Mayville State (N.D.), South Dakota Mines and Valley City State (N.D.). The jamboree hits off at 10 a.m. on Sept. 21 and 9 a.m. on Sept. 22 with six matches scheduled on each day.
COACHES' CORNER: Amy Veenhof enters her fourth season as head coach at Dakota State. She has coached three all-conference players and seven NAIA Academic All-American scholar athletes. Megan Kusler is in her first season as an assistant coach.
