Trojan runners excel in DSU/Herb Blakely Invitational

MADISON, S.D. – A total of three runners from Dakota State University cross country placed in the top 10 in the DSU/Herb Blakely Invitational Saturday morning at the Madison Country Club. It was the season opener for Dakota State's cross country teams.
Mount Marty (S.D.) claimed the women's team title with 16 points, placing four runners in the top 4 in the 5000-meters race (23 runners). Briar Cliff (Iowa) was second with 58 points. DSU was third with 64 points.
Kayla Sveen finished ninth for the Trojans with a time of 22 minutes and two seconds. Tara Ronke was 11th in 22:40. Summer Bronson placed 13th in 23 minutes and three seconds. Anastasia Asimakopoulos was 16th in 23:38. Amber Wiebenga placed 18th in 24:31.
Kaylee Fly of Mount Marty won the individual title with a time of 19:24.
The Lancers won the men's title with 17 points. Briar Cliff was second with 43 points. Dakota State did not field a complete team for the race. A total of 28 runners competed in the 8000-meter run.
DSU's Andy Coy placed second behind Matt Fideler (unattached – former DSU track All-American) with a time of 26:22. Fideler won the individual title in 25 minutes and 46 seconds.
Nic Penning was fifth in 27:39. Taylor Hauge finished 10th with a time of 28:50.
Michael Hoffman, Steve Selchert, Jared Truman and Thomas Ricket ran as unattached for the Trojans. Hoffman placed fourth with a time of 27:21. Selchert placed 17th in 30:28. Truman was 24th with a time of 33:39. Ricket placed 26th in 38:20.
Dakota State returns back to action on Saturday, Sept. 29. The Trojan men's cross country team travels to St. Paul, Minn. to compete in the Roy Griak Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota. The women's team will stay in Madison as they run in the Trojan Day Parade 5K run as part of DSU's homecoming festivities.
