DSU splits in first day of Independent Volleyball Jamboree

MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota State's volleyball team continued their seven-match home stand Friday as they hosted the six-team Independent Volleyball Jamboree at the DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans survived a five-set victory thriller over Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) foe Ashford (Iowa) to kick-off the jamboree. Valley City State (N.D.) stopped Trojans' three-match winning streak in the night cap as the Vikings swept DSU in three straight sets.
Dakota State currently stands at 8-8 overall record and 1-1 A.I.I. conference record after the loss to the Vikings.
Dakota State (S.D.) 3, Ashford (Iowa) 2 - BOX SCORE
The Trojans struggled in the first set with a hitting percentage of .026 as the Saints recorded a 25-16 first set win. Ashford recorded a hitting efficiency of .303.
DSU bounced back in the second set, winning by the score of 25-20 to even the match at 1-1. The Trojans recorded 15 kills and a hitting percentage of .289. Ashford was held to a minus .025 hitting percentage.
AU roared to a 14-5 lead in the third set. The Saints earned a 2-1 match lead with a 25-12 third set win.
The Trojans jumped to a 15-7 lead in the fourth set. Ashford trimmed their deficit to 17-16 with a 9-2 scoring run. The Saints overtook the lead at 20-18, but DSU closed the fourth set with a 7-3 run to force the fifth and deciding set.
Dakota State started the deciding set with an 8-2 lead. The Saints answered back by scoring five straight points to cut DSU's lead to 8-7. At 12-12, the Trojans scored the final three points (two kills from Kristen DiPaola) of the match to earn a 15-12 fifth set victory.
DiPaola led the Trojans' offensive attack with 23 kills. Taylor Mosco added 12 kills. Caitlin Pick recorded eight kills. Stacey Schuller produced 41 set assists.
Five players recorded in double-digits digs for DSU. Katie Green had 21 digs. DiPaola added 15 digs. Schuller had 14 digs. Mandi Atkins had 12 digs. Allison Thielsen had 10 digs.
Morgan Martells, Danielle Tombolato and Micah Wedemeier each had nine kills for the Saints. Danielle Rzewnicki recorded 18 set assists. Liz Gbur added 13 assists.
Karrah Toby led AU's defense with 26 digs. Aubree Pirello added 13 digs. Caitlin Foran had 10 digs and three service aces. Amanda West had a solo block and five block assists.
Dakota State outhit Ashford 51-47 in the match. AU had a hitting percentage of .124 compared to the Trojans' .096.
AU had nine blocks while DSU had five blocks in the match. The Trojans had 87 digs compared to the Saints' 81.
Valley City State (N.D.) 3, Dakota State 0 - BOX SCORE
Valley City State handed DSU their first loss in the current seven-match home stand by the scores of 29-27, 25-20 and 25-21.
There were a total of 20 ties in the opening set. The Vikings squeaked out a 29-27 first set win.
VCSU recorded a hitting percentage of .424 in the second set to earn a 25-20 second-set win and gained a 2-0 match lead. The Trojans had a hitting efficiency of .300.
DSU was unable to complete a comeback in the third set as the Vikings secured the match with a 25-21 victory.
DiPaola recorded 18 attacks in the match for Dakota State. Thielsen added 12 kills. Schuller had 36 set assists.
Green led DSU's defense with 22 digs. Schuller added nine digs.
Jill Noeske had 15 kills for the Vikings. Aurissa Martens had 11 kills. Stephanie Miller recorded 21 assists. Anna Neufeld added 15 assists.
Emily Plowman had 14 digs for VCSU. Miller added 10 digs.
Valley City State outhit the Trojans 54-43 in the match. The Vikings recorded a hitting percentage of .325 compared to DSU .296.
VCSU had four blocks in the match compared to the Trojans' one.
Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column Saturday. The second day of the Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) kicks off with Jamestown (N.D.) and Ashford (Iowa) at 9 a.m. at DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans will play South Dakota Mines at 3 p.m. and concludes the jamboree facing Mayville State (N.D.) in the night cap at 7 p.m.
