DSU cross country set to run at Briar Cliff Invitational Saturday

THIS WEEK: Dakota State men's and women's cross country teams return to action Saturday morning. The Trojans are set to run in the Briar Cliff Invitational, which will be held in McCook Lake, S.D. The meet will be held at Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve. The women's 5000-meters race is slated to start at 10 a.m., followed by the men's 8K course at 10:45 a.m.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State placed six women's runners in the top 15 in the annual Trojan Day 5K run on Sept. 29 as part of DSU's homecoming festivities. Summer Bronson was seventh in the 84-runners race with a time of twenty-two minutes and 3.09 seconds, followed by Kayla Sveen with an eighth-place finish in 22:05.05. Stephanie Uher was ninth with a time of 22:08.03. Brooke Fritz placed 11th in 22:32.08. Anastasia Asmiakopoulos was 12th in 22:54.01 and Amber Wiebenga finished with a time of 22:56.02 for a 13th place finish. Dakota State men's team raced in the 27th annual Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 29, which featured numerous NCAA Division II and NAIA schools from the Midwest area. The field featured a total of 401 runners where DSU's Andy Coy finished 40th with a time of 26 minutes and 33 seconds. Nic Penning was 160th with a time of 27:55.1. Taylor Hauge placed 308th in 29:49.1 and Andy Quenzer finished 358th in 31:07.01.
HONORABLE MENTION RECOGNITION: Andy Coy of Dakota State was mentioned in the honorable mention section in this week's NAIA Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week. He was the top Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) runner in the Roy Griak Invitational meet on Sept. 29. Coy finished with a time of 26 minutes and 33 seconds for a 40th-place finish.
COACHES' CORNER: Buzz Stevenson is the head coach for the Trojan cross country teams. He has been involved in sports since his high school days in Ipswich, S.D. and has been a coach and teacher for more than 45 years. While at Dakota State, Stevenson has garnered 14 South Dakota-Iowa Conference (SDIC) Coach of the Year titles and two NAIA Great Plains Athletic Region Cross Country Coach of the Year awards. Stevenson has accumulated 14 SDIC championships and his athletes have produced 57 All-American honors. Anthony Drealan is in his second year as an assistant coach in cross country. He competed for the Trojan cross country and track teams. He holds numerous school records and was a two-time NAIA All-American athlete. Drealan also helped DSU win its first-ever Dakota Athletic Conference championship in cross country during the fall of 2009.

UP NEXT: Dakota State will compete in their final regular-season meet on Saturday, Oct. 20. The Trojans travel to Yankton, S.D. to run in the Mount Marty Invitational.
