Jimmies sweep Trojan Volleyball in three straight sets

MADISON, S.D. – Jamestown (N.D.) outhit Dakota State (S.D.) 47-30 in kills Saturday afternoon as JC swept the Trojans in three straight sets at DSU Fieldhouse. The Jimmies won by the scores of 25-17, 25-13 and 25-23 in the annual 'Dig Pink' volleyball match.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 11-14 and 2-3 in the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference record. Jamestown, receiving votes in the latest NAIA Volleyball national poll, raised their record to 19-4 and 7-1 in the A.I.I.
A total of 11 ties were featured in the early going of the first set. With JC leading at 15-13, the Jimmies closed the first set with a 10-4 run for a 25-17 victory. Jamestown recorded a .429 hitting percentage with 18 kills in the first set compared to DSU's .286 hitting percentage with 12 kills.
JC opened the second set by scoring seven straight points for a 7-0 lead. The Jimmies widen their lead to 14-3. Dakota State used an 8-2 run to trim their deficit to 16-11. JC sealed the second set with a 9-2 closing run for a 25-13 win. Jamestown hit .303 in the second set while DSU had a .000 hitting efficiency (six kills with six errors in 31 attempts).
The Trojans trailed at 20-14 in the third set. Dakota State scored five consecutive points to cut JC's lead to 20-19. DSU could get no closer than one point in four occasions (21-20, 22-21, 23-22 and 24-23). The Jimmies closed the match Sarah Becker's kill for a 25-23 victory and a 3-0 match win.
Kristen DiPaola led the Trojans' offensive attack with 18 kills (she needs 18 kills to reach 1000 career kills at Dakota State through two seasons). Taylor Mosco added six kills. Stacey Schuller produced 25 set assists.
Four players recorded in double digits digs for DSU. Katie Green had 14 digs. Schuller added 13 digs. DiPaola had 11 digs. Allison Thielsen recorded 10 digs.
Caitlin Pick, DiPaola and Mosco each had two block assists for the Trojans.
Kaitlyn Rogalla had 14 kills for the Jimmies. Sarah Becker added 11 kills with a killing percentage of .526. Katie Zent had eight kills. Kelsey Deragisch recorded 19 set assists. Kaia Buck added 17 assists.
Katie Lee led JC's defense with 16 digs. Buck added 12 digs. Alaina Brown recorded four service aces.
Jamestown had a killing percentage of .280 in the match compared to the Trojans' .127 hitting efficiency.
Both teams had four blocks in the match.
Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column Tuesday night as they host Presentation (S.D.) in DSU's final home regular-season volleyball match. First serve is set for 7 p.m. Seniors and DSU Faculty/Staff Recognition Night will be recognized prior to the match.
