DSU falls short in a four-set volleyball match at Saint Mary (Neb.)

OMAHA, Neb. – The Dakota State University volleyball team continued their road trip in Nebraska Saturday afternoon. The Trojans visited Saint Mary (Neb.) at the Lied Fitness Center. The Flames defeated the Trojans in four sets by the scores of 25-18, 21-25, 25-22 and 25-20.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 12-16. Saint Mary improved their record to 13-17 and earned a season series split with the Trojans (DSU defeated Flames earlier this season 3-0 as part of the Corn Palace on Sept. 8).
SM recorded a hitting percentage of .237 (14 kills with five errors in 38 attempts) to earn a 25-18 first-set victory. DSU had a hitting efficiency of .065 (8 kills with six errors in 31 attempts).
With the Flames leading at 12-11 in the second set, the Trojans sealed the second set with a 14-9 closing run for a 25-21 win to even the match at 1-1.
Saint Mary secured the match by winning the third (25-22) and fourth (25-20) sets. The Flames hit .240 in the fourth set compared to the Trojans' .163.
Kristen DiPaola smashed a match-high 23 kills for the Trojans. Caitlin Pick added 11 kills. Taylor Mosco had eight kills. Stacey Schuller recorded 38 set assists.
Four DSU players recorded in double digits digs. Katie Green had 23 digs. DiPaola added 22 digs. Allison Thielsen had 13 digs. Schuller had 12 digs. Mosco had four block assists (two blocks).
Shayna Dwyer had four service aces for the Trojans.
Joy Leick and Kaylee Wallace each had 15 kills for the Flames. Jessica Kuehner added 13 kills. Shelby Easley had 24 set assists. Adrienne Mahoney recorded 16 assists.
Baylee Collins had 16 digs for Saint Mary. Easley added 13 digs. Wallace recorded 12 digs. Leick had 10 digs. Kuehner and Maddie Scow each had two solo blocks.
Saint Mary had a slight advantage in kills, outhitting the Trojans 51-50. The Flames hit .181 in the match (21 attack errors) while DSU had a .118 hitting percentage (31 attack errors).
Dakota State had 82 digs compared to Saint Mary 68 digs.
The Trojans head into the final week of regular-season play next week on the road. Dakota State will travel to the Stewart Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. Tuesday night to take on in-state rival University of Sioux Falls. First serve is set for 7 p.m. The Trojans conclude their regular-season schedule next weekend with three matches in North Dakota.
