Trojan Volleyball heads into final week of regular-season play with four matches

THIS WEEK: Dakota State (12-16 overall record, 2-3 Association of Independent Institutions conference record) heads into the final regular-season week with four matches scheduled on the road. The Trojans head to the Stewart Center on Tuesday evening to take on in-state rival University of Sioux Falls (12-11). First serve is slated for 7 p.m. On Friday night, Dakota State travels to the Hansen Center in Jamestown for a triangular. The Trojans play Valley City State (N.D.) (11-19, 1-4 A.I.I.) at 6 p.m. and host-team Jamestown (N.D.) (20-7, 7-1 A.I.I.) at 8 p.m. DSU plays their final regular-season match at Mayville State (N.D.) (21-12, 1-4 A.I.I.) on Saturday evening. First serve is set for 5 p.m. at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.
DIPAOLA SMASHES 1000TH CAREER KILL: Kristen DiPaola smashed her 1000th career kill at Dakota State in a 3-1 victory over Presentation (S.D.) on Oct. 16 at DSU Fieldhouse. It was DSU's final home match of the season. DiPaola currently records 1041 career kills with the Trojans through two seasons.
SCHULLER ACCUMULATES CAREER SET ASSISTS: Sophomore Stacey Schuller (setter, Jackson, Minn.) continues to accumulates her career set assists a Trojan. She amasses a total of 2342 assists through two seasons with DSU, the third most career set assists in the DSU volleyball record book. Jill Weisser holds the DSU school record for most career assists with 3150 from 2000-2004. Katalin Varga is second with 2904 assists from 1994-1998.
REGIONALLY SPEAKING: Dakota State remains at No. 7 in the latest edition of the independent weekly rankings, released on Oct. 15. The rankings are used to determine the teams to qualify for the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) post-season tournament in November. The rankings are (overall record as of Oct. 15): 1) Cal State San Marcos (18-10); 2) Jamestown (N.D.) (19-4); 3) Ashford (Iowa) (17-14); 4) Mayville State (N.D.) (19-9); 5) La Sierra (Calif.) (17-9); 6) Valley City State (N.D.) (10-18); 7) Dakota State (S.D.) (11-14) and 8) Rochester (Mich.) (18-15).
DSU CLOSES HOME SCHEDULE WITH VICTORY: Dakota State concluded their 2012 home campaign with a 3-1 victory (25-15, 22-25, 25-17 and 25-12) over Presentation (S.D.) on Oct. 16. The Trojans outhit the Saints 57-32 in the match. DiPaola smashed 25 kills. Caitlin Pick added 10 kills. Stacey Schuller produced 41 assists. The Trojans hit .254 in the match compared to the Saints' .078.
A.I.I. INDEPENDENT VOLLEYBALL CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT: The Association of Independent Volleyball Conference Tournament will be hosted by Mayville State University in Mayville, N.D. on Nov. 9-10. The tournament will start with a pool play format on Nov. 9 with top two teams in each pool advancing to the single-elimination tournament and championship match on Nov. 10.
DSU IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS: According to the NAIA-DakStats statistical website as of Monday, Dakota State ranks 34th in the nation in total digs of 1740. The Trojans are 41st in digs per set with an average of 16.6 digs per set. Kristen DiPaola leads the nation in total kills (550) and kills per set (5.2). Stacey Schuller is 24th in the nation in total assists (989) and 46th in assists per set (9.4). Katie Green ranks 40th in the nation in total digs (469).
TROJANS QUICK LEADERS: Kristen DiPaola leads DSU with 26 service aces (0.3 aces per set). She amasses a total of 550 kills this season (5.2 kills per set). Stacey Schuller produces 989 set assists (9.4 assists per set). Katie Green leads DSU's defense with 469 digs (4.5 digs per set). Taylor Mosco have a total of 73 blocks (0.7 blocks per set) for the Trojans.
RECORD BOOK: Kristen DiPaola accumulates a total of 550 kills this season after the match on Oct. 20. Her 550 kills produce the second most kills in a single season in DSU volleyball record book. Sophie Balough currently holds the school record for most kills in a single season with 680 in 1994-1995.
LAST MEETING: Dakota State and University of Sioux Falls split two meetings last season with each team winning on their home court. The Trojans defeated the Cougars 3-1 (18-25, 25-22, 25-19 and 25-23) at DSU Fieldhouse on Oct. 7, 2011. USF defeated DSU in a five-set thriller at Stewart Center on Oct. 28, 2011 as part of USF's Halloween Classic. The Cougars won by the scores of 21-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-22 and 15-12. Valley City State swept Dakota State in the Independent Volleyball Jamboree on Sept. 21 at DSU Fieldhouse this year. The Vikings won in three straight sets (29-27, 25-20 and 25-21). VCSU outhit DSU 54-43 in the match. Jamestown won the last meeting with the Trojans at DSU Fieldhouse on Oct. 13 in the annual 'Dig' Pink' match. The Jimmies won by the scores of 25-17, 25-13 and 25-23. Mayville State won in four sets (25-22, 23-25, 25-22 and 25-16) with Dakota State on Sept. 22 as part of the Independent Volleyball Jamboree. The Trojans outhit the Comets 63-60 in kills. Mayville State had a hitting percentage of .267 (17 attack errors) compared to DSU's .208 hitting percentage (27 attack errors).
COACHES' CORNER: Amy Veenhof enters her fourth season as head coach at Dakota State. She has coached three all-conference players and seven NAIA Academic All-American scholar athletes. Megan Kusler is in her first season as an assistant coach.
