2012-13 DSU men's basketball team debuts season Thursday night at DSU Fieldhouse

THIS WEEK: The 2012-13 Dakota State University men's basketball team (0-0 overall record) makes their season debut at home Thursday night as they host Oglala Lakota (S.D.) at DSU Fieldhouse. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. or approximately 25 minutes after the conclusion of the Lady T's basketball game. Thursday's game kicks off the Trojans' four-game home stand at DSU Fieldhouse that includes three straight opponents from the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC).
2011 IN REVIEW: Dakota State had a historic 2011-12 season with an overall record of 18-13—most wins since 1992. The Trojans captured their first-ever Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Division II Men's Basketball Conference Post-season Tournament, defeating two consecutive ranked teams-Valley City State (N.D.) in the semifinals and Jamestown (N.D.) in the championship game. DSU qualified for the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Tournament for the first time since 1992. The Trojans lost a 69-63 overtime contest to McPherson (Kan.) in the first round of the NAIA national tournament. Spencer Adams and Jesse Bean were named to A.I.I. All-Conference second team. Donald Stewart was selected as A.I.I. conference tournament's most valuable player. DSU's head coach Gary Garner earned the A.I.I. Conference Coach of the Year honor. He recorded his 400th career collegiate victory on Nov. 1, 2011 after a 79-53 victory over Grace (Neb.) at DSU Fieldhouse.
2012-13 ROSTER BREAKDOWN: Dakota State have 12 players on the its roster for the 2012-13 season. The Trojans have three seniors (Tyrone Gordon, Jr., Luke Lamb and Keith Lee II), six juniors (Kevin Danielsen, Cameron Krump, John Lamb, Terrell Newton, Marcus Smith and Yusuf Vinson), two sophomores (Ryan McCuthcheon and Mitchell Trestrail) and a freshman (Anthony Taylor). Gary Garner is entering his fourth season as DSU men's basketball head coach. Matthew Garner is starting his fourth year as an assistant coach, while Mike Larsen is entering his second year as an assistant coach.
TROJANS IN SEASON OPENER GAMES: Since Gary Garner became head coach at Dakota State University, the Trojans had won three consecutive season opener games. DSU is seeking their third straight home season opener victory on Thursday night.
2012 SCHEDULE: Dakota State plays a 28-game regular-season schedule and four exhibition games on their 2012-13 schedule. The Trojans kick off their season with four straight games at the DSU Fieldhouse in a span of two weeks. DSU will play four NCAA Division II schools (Northern State, University of Sioux Falls, Augustana and South Dakota Mines), along with NCAA Division I South Dakota State (which qualified for the NCAA Division I national tournament last season) on their schedule.
A.I.I. PRESEASON RANKINGS: The Trojans are ranked fourth in the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) preseason rankings. Valley City State (N.D.) is first, followed by Jamestown (N.D.) at No. 2 and Rochester (Mich.) at No. 3. Ashford (Iowa), a newcomer in the A.I.I., ranks at No. 5.

Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. or approximately 25 minutes after the conclusion of the Lady T's basketball game. DSU hosts their in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 4 p.m.
