Trojan men’s basketball breaks records in home season opener victory over Bravehearts

MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota State University men's basketball team broke several DSU school records Thursday evening as the Trojans stumped Oglala Lakota (S.D.) 130-47 at DSU Fieldhouse. Since the arrival of DSU men's basketball head coach Gary Garner, the Trojans had won their fourth straight season opener game.
Dakota State broke the new DSU school record for most points in a single game. The previous old record was 123 points versus Martin Luther (Minn.) during the 1991-92 season. In addition, the Trojans broke a new school record for the largest margin of victory with 83 points (previous old mark was 57 points in a victory versus Mount Scenario (Wis.) during the 2001-02 season).
The Trojans opened the game by scoring six straight points for a 6-0 early lead. The Bravehearts used an 11-5 run to earn their first lead of the game with fifteen minutes and 28 seconds left in the first-half.
At 13-13 with 14:25 left before halftime, DSU went on to close the first-half with a 58-17 scoring run for a 70-31 halftime lead.
Dakota State outscored Oglala Lakota 59-17 in the second-half to seal the victory.
All DSU players scored in the game. Terrell Newton scored 27 points off the bench. He was 10-for-11 from the field (second in the DSU record book for highest field goal percentage in a single game – 90.9 percent) and 7-for-9 from the free-throw line. Yusuf Vinson recorded a double-double of 22 points and earned 16 rebounds. Luke Lamb added a double-double of 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
John Lamb had a triple-double in the game for the Trojans. He scored 16 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out 10 assists (tied for third most assists in DSU record book in a single game). Marcus Smith had 19 points. Cameron Krump added 15 points and earned eight rebounds.
Steven Pourier, Jr. led Oglala Lakota with 13 points. Tyson Heart added 12 points. Brice Hornbeck recorded 11 points.
Dakota State shot 60 percent from the field (45-for-75) compared to the Bravehearts' 22.2 percent (16-for-72). The Trojans drained 10 3-pointers in 25 attempts (40 percent), while Oglala Lakota was 6-for-32 from the 3-point arc (18.8 percent).
The Trojans were 30-for-38 from the free-throw line (78.9 percent). Oglala Lakota was 9-for-13 from the free-throw line (69.2 percent).
DSU outscored the Bravehearts 37-5 in points off turnovers and 64-20 inside the paint.
Dakota State continues their four-game home stand on Wednesday night. The Trojans welcome No. 7 Northwestern (Iowa) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse.
