DWU defeats Lady T's in women's basketball in-state rival game

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) raced to a 41-19 halftime lead over Dakota State Lady T's Tuesday evening at DSU Fieldhouse. The Lady T's quickly earned the first lead of the game, but the Tigers maintained control for the rest of the game with an 82-59 victory over DSU.
Dakota State lost their fourth straight game and dropped their overall record to 1-4. DWU, member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC), remained undefeated in four games to start the season.
The Lady T's opened with a 2-0 lead by Courtney Hamblin's jump shot with nineteen minutes and 45 seconds left in the first-half.
DWU used a 14-3 lead in the span of eight minutes to earn a 14-5 lead with 11:49 left before intermission.
The Tigers outscored DSU 20-2 in points off turnovers to grab a 21-point halftime lead.
Dakota Wesleyan kept their double-digit lead in the second-half. The Lady T's could get no closer than 19 points at 11:46 remaining in the game (58-39).
Katy Pillar and Alyson Drooger each had nine points for the Lady T's. Kylie Westover and Jayda Swenson each added six points. Drooger pulled down eight rebounds and recorded four blocked shots. Pillar and Courtney Hulstein each earned six boards. Yui Onodera and Kendra Lindblad each dished out three assists.
Kim Johnson led DWU with 18 points. Elizabeth Lamb added 16 points. She had five rebounds and five assists. Amanda Hart scored 10 points. Taylor Piper grabbed seven rebounds and produced seven assists. Brittany Hills had nine points and five assists.
The Lady T's shot 46.5 percent from the field (20-for-43) compared to DWUs 45.7 percent (32-for-70). The Tigers drained 10 3-pointers in 20 attempts (50 percent), while DSU was 2-for-9 (22 percent) from the 3-point arc.
Dakota State won the rebounding battle over the Tigers. The Lady T's recorded 38 rebounds compared to the Tigers' 31 rebounds.
DSU committed 31 turnovers in the game while DWU had 10 turnovers. The Tigers outscored the Lady T's 26-7 overall in points off turnovers.
Dakota State looks to end their losing streak on Thursday evening as they head to Ellendale, N.D. The Lady T's take on Trinity Bible (N.D.). Tip-off starts at 6 p.m. at Ray Ulmer Fieldhouse.
