Trojans couldn’t overcome Vikings’ second-half surge in exhibition game

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – NCAA Division II Augustana (S.D.) held Dakota State men's basketball team to a 28.6 percent shooting in the second-half Monday evening as the Vikings earned a 66-47 victory at the Elmen Center. It was the second straight exhibition game loss for the Trojans against a member from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Dakota State remains at 4-1 overall record. Augustana remained undefeated in four games, all against former of the Dakota Athletic Conference members.
The Vikings got off on a fast start by scoring the first seven points of the game for a 7-0 lead in the first minute and a half. AC extended their lead to 10 points in two occasions at 16-6 (14:54 in the first-half) and 18-8 (14:31 in the first-half).
DSU erased AC's 10-point lead with a 17-3 run to gain their lead at 25-21 with 4:26 remaining before intermission (the Trojans earned their first lead at 23-21 with 5:06 left in the first-half).
Augustana closed the first-half with a 13-4 scoring run for a 34-29 halftime lead.
The Trojans shot 52.9 percent from the field (9-for-17) compared to the Vikings' 40.6 percent (13-for-32) in the first twenty minutes of the game.
Dakota State tied the game at 36-36 with a 7-2 run in the first three minutes and 10 seconds of the second-half. From there, the Vikings scored 21 straight points in a span of over 11 minutes for a 57-36 lead with 5:27 remaining in the game.
DSU was 6-for-21 from the field in the second-half while AC was 46.7 percent from the field (46.7 percent).
Yusuf Vinson led the Trojans with 10 points. Luke Lamb added nine points and grabbed six rebounds. Marcus Smith scored eight points off the bench. Cameron Krump had seven points. John Lamb and Vinson each pulled down five rebounds. Luke Lamb and Vinson each dished out two assists.
Cameron McCaffrey poured in 21 points for the Vikings. He was 8-for-16 from the field and 3-for-4 at the free-throw line. McCaffrey produced five assists. Alex Richter had nine points and six rebounds.
Dakota State shot 39.5 percent overall from the field (15-for-38) compared to the Vikings' 43.5 percent (27-for-62). The Trojans were 6-for-17 behind the 3-point arc (35.3 percent) while AC was 5-for-22 from the 3-point line (22.7 percent).
DSU converted 11 free-throws in 18 attempts (61.1 percent). The Vikings struggled with a 7-for-17 performance at the free-throw line (41.2 percent).
Augustana won the rebounding battle, recording 39 rebounds. DSU had 29 rebounds in the game.
The Trojans committed 21 turnovers in the game compared to the Vikings 12 turnovers.
AC outscored DSU 36-16 inside the paint and 14-0 in second-chance points.
Dakota State returns back home at DSU Fieldhouse Tuesday evening. The Trojans look to extend their best start as they entertain Presentation (S.D.). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
