DSU men’s basketball wins sixth straight game with a 72-59 road victory

NEW ULM, Minn. – Dakota State shot a sizzling 52 percent from the field to defeat Martin Luther (Minn.) 72-59 Saturday afternoon at the Luther Student Center. The Trojans recorded their sixth straight win and continue their best start since 1966-67 (9-1 record to start the season).
Dakota State, receiving votes in the first regular-season edition of the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' poll, raised their overall record to 7-1. Martin Luther, member of NCAA Division III and Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC), remained winless in four games.
John Lamb scored its first five points of the game as DSU earned a 5-0 lead with eighteen minutes and 47 seconds left.
At 21-19 with 6:23 remaining before intermission, the Trojans closed the first-half with a 13-5 run to earn a 10-point halftime lead (34-24).
Dakota State shot 50 percent from the field (12-for-24) in the game's first twenty minutes. The Trojans were also 4-for-10 from the 3-point line (40 percent) and 6-for-9 from the free-throw line (66.7 percent). Martin Luther was held to 26.5 percent shooting from the field (9-for-34) and 2-for-11 from the 3-point arc (18.2 percent). The Knights were 4-for-6 from the free-throw line (66.7 percent).
Yusuf Vinson made a lay-up to kick-off the second-half with a twelve-point lead at 36-24 (19:16 left).
The Knights used a 14-6 run to trim their deficit to 42-38 with 14:19 remaining.
DSU went on a 14-5 scoring run to widen their lead in double digits at 56-43 with 8:17 left.
The Trojans maintained control in the rest of the second-half to secure the victory. Dakota State outscored Martin Luther 38-35 in the second-half.
John Lamb poured in a game-high 26 points for the Trojans. He shot 8-for-11 from the field, including 5-for-8 from the 3-point arc. He converted five free-throws in six attempts and stole the ball four times. Luke Lamb recorded a double-double of 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. He was 8-for-12 from the field and 2-for-2 at the free-throw line. Cameron Krump added 10 points and recoded three blocked shots. Vinson scored seven points, earned seven rebounds and dished out four assists. Terrell Newton added four assists.
Luke Rothe scored 21 points for the Knights. He was 8-for-16 from the field and 3-for-7 from the 3-point line. Galen Holzhueter added 13 points. Josh Danell had eight points, pulled down 10 rebounds and recorded two blocked shots. Kaleb Buch scored eight points and dished out five assists. He had four steals.
Dakota State shot 26-for-50 overall from the field compared to the Knights' 31 percent (22-for-71). The Knights were 7-for-24 from the 3-point line (29.2 percent) while DSU was 6-for-19 (31.6 percent).
DSU converted 13 free-throws in 19 attempts (73.7 percent). Martin Luther was 8-for-13 (61.5 percent) at the free-throw line.
The Knights outrebounded the Trojans 41-37.
Dakota State continues their road stretch on Thursday night. The Trojans play in an exhibition game at the Frost Arena, visiting NCAA Division I South Dakota State. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Brookings, S.D.
