Knights snap Lady T’s basketball two-game winning streak

NEW ULM, Minn. – Martin Luther (Minn.) snapped Lady T's two-game winning streak Saturday afternoon at the Luther Student Center. The Knights won by the score of 71-59.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 3-5. Martin Luther, member of NCAA Division III and Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC), improved their overall record to 1-4.
The Lady T's scored five straight points in the first one minute and 28 seconds of the game to earn a 5-0 lead.
With the score tied at 19-19 with less than eight minutes before intermission, Martin Luther used a 13-0 spurt to earn a 32-19 lead with 3:33 left in the first-half. DSU ended their scoring drought by Katy Pillar's basket with 3:18 remaining before halftime.
The Knights maintained a nine-point halftime lead at 37-28.
Martin Luther was 42.4 percent from the field (14-for-33) in the first twenty minutes of the game. The Knights were 7-for-12 at the free-throw line. DSU shot 11-for-28 from the field (39.3 percent) and 3-for-4 at the free-throw line.
The Lady T's kicked off the second-half with a 12-2 run to regain their lead at 40-39 with 16:30 remaining.
The Knights used a 15-4 scoring run in a span of over 8 1/2 minutes to earn a 59-44 lead (7:36 left).
Dakota State could not get closer than 10 points in two occasions in closing seconds.
Martin Luther outscored DSU 34-31 in the second-half.
Pillar recorded a double-double of 13 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for the Lady T's. She was 6-for-11 from the field. Courtney Hulstein drained four 3-pointers in the game and scored 14 points off the bench (added two free-throws). Kylie Westover had 13 points. Yui Onodera recorded eight points and produced seven assists. Alyson Drooger had four blocked shots. Cassie Jacobsen earned six rebounds.
Hannah Hackbrath led the Knights with 19 points. She shot 8-for-14 from the field, including 3-for-5 from the 3-point arc. Hannah Rothe and Brittney Gossen each added 10 points. Gossen was perfect from the free-throw line, converting all six attempts. Alex Anthon had four steals.
DSU shot 41.4 percent overall from the field (24-for-58) compared to the Knights' 41 percent (25-for-61). The Lady T's recorded eight 3-pointers in 24 attempts (34.8 percent) while Martin Luther was 3-for-8 (37.5 percent).
The Knights went to the free-throw line 24 times, making 18 free-throws (69.2 percent). DSU was 3-for-4 (75 percent), all in the first-half.
Martin Luther won the rebounding battle 40-39.
The Lady T's committed 27 turnovers compared to the Knights' 18 turnovers.
Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column on Wednesday night. The Lady T's return home, hosting their in-state rival Mount Marty of the Great Plains Athletic Conference. There will be a junior varsity game between the Lancers and the Lady T's at 4:45 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 7 p.m. All games will be at the DSU Fieldhouse.
