Dakota State track and field opens indoor season in MankatoTHIS WEEK:   Dakota State opens their indoor track and field season at the Minnesota State-Mankato Chuck Petersen Preseason Open in Mankato, Minn.  The event is slated to start at 11 a.m. with the weight throw and long jump. The first running event is scheduled to start at 12 noon with the 60-meter hurdles. 

2011-12 SEASON REVIEW:  Dakota State had two runners earning NAIA All-American status after recording impressive performances at the 2012 NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships in Geneva, Ohio.  Andy Coy captured the men's 1000-meter run with DSU school record time of two minutes and 24.94 seconds.  He became the first DSU men's indoor track and field athlete in program history to capture a national champion in an individual event.  Matt Fideler, who was a senior last year, earned NAIA national runner-up in the men's one-mile run.  He clocked a DSU school record time of 4:06.64, earning his third NAIA Indoor Track and Field All-American honor during his career at Dakota State.  Four DSU indoor track and field athletes were listed in the Trojan record book last season, including Coy's and Fideler's times at the NAIA nationals.  Fideler also broke the men's 3000-meter run by a time of 8:35.92.  Ryan Gimbel broke the DSU school record in the men's weight throw measurement of 44 feet and 11.75 inches.  Stephanie Uher tied the DSU school record in the women's 600-meter run by a time of 1:38.60 (Brittany Young – 2011).      

Dakota State track and field opens indoor season in MankatoROSTER BREAKDOWN:  The Trojans have 41 athletes listed on their roster this season.  Dakota State has 10 seniors on the team – Claire Beck, Summer Bronson, Andy Coy, Stacey Berg, Michael Hoffman, Nic Penning, Andrew Quenzer, Gabe Samuelson, Stephanie Uher and Stephanie Warnke.

PENNING QUALIFIES FOR NAIA OUTDOOR:  Senior Nic Penning captured the Midland Half-Marathon event on Dec. 1, hosted by Midland University.  As a result, he qualified for the NAIA Men's Outdoor Track and Field National Championship in marathon for the second straight season.  A total of 18 runners competed in the 13.1 mile race.  Penning won the title by recording his career best time of one hour, 12 minutes and two seconds.  He improved his previous half-marathon's time of 1:13:56.  The NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships will be held in Marion, Ind. (hosted by Indiana Wesleyan) on May 23-25, 2013.

COACHES' CORNER:  Dakota State University track and field head coach Buzz Stevenson has been involved in sports since his high school days in Ipswich, S.D. and has been a coach and teacher for more than 45 years.  While at DSU, Stevenson has garnered 14 South Dakota-Iowa Conference Coach of the Year titles and two NAIA Great Plains regional cross-country coach of the year awards.  He has accumulated 14 SDIC championships and his athletes have produced 57 All-American honors.  Anthony Drealan is in his second year as an assistant coach in track and field.  Cody Foreman is also an assistant track and field coach for the Trojans.  Matt Fideler is the DSU track and field student assistant coach.

UP NEXT:  Dakota State returns back to action on Jan. 14, 2013.  The Trojans head to Sioux Center, Iowa to compete in the Dordt Invitational.
