DSU kicks off indoor track season; Boomsma qualifies for NAIA nationals

MANKATO, Minn. – The Dakota State University kicked off their 2012-13 indoor track and field season Saturday at the Minnesota State-Mankato Preseason Open at Myers Fieldhouse. Seth Boomsma captured the men's 60-meter dash and qualified for the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National meet.
The meet featured schools from NCAA Division I and II along with DSU and Waldorf (Iowa) from the NAIA.
Boomsma clocked a time of 6.86 seconds for a second-place finish in the 60-meter dash preliminaries. D'Artist Williams was fourth in 7.01 seconds. Kris Dearie recorded a time of 7.36 seconds for a 19th-place finish. Both Boomsma and Williams qualified for the finals in the men's 60-meter finals.
In the men's 60-meter finals, Boomsma recorded a national qualifying time of 6.82 seconds. His time was .01 second off for tying the DSU school record (Brian Melvin – 6.81 seconds in 2006). Williams finished fifth in the final with a time of 7.03 seconds.
Ryan Gimbel broke his previous DSU school record in the men's weight throw. He threw a measurement of 47 feet and 4.25 inches for a third-place finish. Gimbel previously set the old record mark of 44 feet and 11.75 inches last indoor track season.
Gimbel placed sixth in the men's shot put with a measurement of 12.79 meters. Zac Woods was eighth (12.78 meters).
Taylor Hauge produced a third-place finish in the men's one-mile run. He ran a time of four minutes and 40.06 seconds in the race. Anastasia Asimakopoulos finished fifth in the women's one-mile run in 6:07.45. Amber Wiebenga was sixth in 6:39.25.
Kayla Sveen ran a time of 3:14.43 for a third-place finish in the women's 1000-meter run. Brooke Fritz finished fourth with a time of 3:15.20.
Four Trojan runners placed in the top 8 in the 600-meter run. Stephanie Uher was fifth in the women's division with a time of 1:43.17. Mark Moeller placed third in 1:26.13. Gabe Samuelson recorded a time of 1:27.99 for a fourth-place finish. Jared Truman finished seventh in 1:32.69.
Williams finished fifth in the men's 200-meter dash with a time of 22.95 seconds. Brandon Clark placed 17th in 24.62 seconds. Claire Beck was 24th with a time of 28.93 seconds in the women's 200-meter dash.
Steve Selchert recorded a fifth-place finish in the men's 800-meter run. He ran a time of 2:02.14.
In the 60-meter hurdles, David Sotir clocked a time of 9.12 seconds for a 10th-place finish. Chad Pelkofer was 14th in 9.39 seconds. Zach Ely finished 21st in 10.70 seconds. In the women's division, Summer Bronson recorded a time of 9.68 seconds for a 14th-place finish.
Shayna Dwyer finished 25th with a measurement of 10.85 meters in the women's weight throw.
In 4 x 400-meter relays event, Dakota State men's 'A' relay team (Moeller, Clark, Samuelson and Andy Quenzer) produced a time of 3:40.34 for a third-place finish. DSU 'B' relay team (Truman, Selchert, Pelkofer and Sotir) was fifth in 3:42.25. The Trojan women's relay team clocked a time of 4:16.28 for a sixth-place finish.
Dakota State indoor track and field teams return back to action in 2013. The Trojans head to Sioux Center, Iowa to compete in the Dordt Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 12.
