DSU Football holds end-of-the-year banquet

MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota State University football team held their end-of-the-year banquet at Nicky's Saturday (Dec. 8).  The Trojan Football coaches handed out awards and honors to the team.

The following awards and honors that were handed out at the banquet:

  • Offensive Most Valuable Player:  Stacey Berg
  • Defensive Most Valuable Player:  Craig Hertz
  • Offensive Lineman of the Year:  Joey Wuolle
  • Defensive Lineman of the Year:  Blake Schlagel
  • Lifter of the Year:  Tyler Poggemeyer
  • Rookie of the Year:  Bobby Tisch
  • Hardest Hitter:  Eric Liles
  • Most Improved:  Marvin Pitts

Brandon Large was selected as the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Offense Most Valuable Player.  Berg, Hertz, Schlagel, Ronnie Jorgenson, and Wuolle were named to the A.I.I. Football All-Conference first-team.  Tisch, Liles, Carl Curtis, Josh Licht and Zac Woods each earned the A.I.I. Football All-Conference Honorable Mention award.

John Niesen was selected to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Football Team first team.  He was also named to the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District 6 College Division Football team honor.  Last September, Niesen was one of the nine NAIA scholar-athletes to be named to the semifinalists for the National Football Foundation (NFF) William V. Campbell Trophy.  He was also nominated for 2012 Allstate American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team®.
