DSU Lady T's basketball team opens 2013 at home Saturday

THIS WEEK: Dakota State women's basketball team (4-7 overall record) opens 2013 at home Saturday afternoon. The Lady T's entertain Midland (Neb.) (6-10) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). Tip-off from the DSU Fieldhouse is set for 4 p.m. Armed Forces Night will be held.
LAST MEETING: Dakota State drained 12 3-pointers in both teams' last meeting as the Lady T's recorded an 83-68 victory over Midland (Neb.) at DSU Fieldhouse on Feb. 11, 2012. DSU jumped to a 39-25 halftime lead and extended their lead to 63-37 with 11:08 remaining. Midland could get no closer than 15 points with a minute left to play. Midland defeated Lady T's on Jan. 7, 2012 in overtime thriller. DSU had their largest lead of the game on two occasions in the second-half, but fell short in overtime by the score of 88-84 at the Midland Events Center in Fremont, Neb.
DSU VERSUS GPAC: Dakota State had faced four different Great Plains Athletic Conference foes this season. The Lady T's are seeking their first win against the GPAC, going 0-4 this season (lost to No. 2 Northwestern (Iowa), Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.), Mount Marty (S.D.) and No. 6 Briar Cliff (Iowa). DSU will face Midland twice, Dakota Wesleyan and Mount Marty in Lady T's remaining games against the GPAC foes in 2013.
BUSY JANUARY SCHEDULE: The Lady T's prepare for their busy January schedule. They are scheduled to play 11 games this month, including four home games at DSU Fieldhouse. On Jan. 19 and 20, four former Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) teams will meet in Jamestown, N.D. for a weekend tournament where the Lady T's play Jamestown in the semifinals (Valley City State takes on Mayville State in the other semifinal). DSU is scheduled to play an exhibition game with long-time former conference foe South Dakota Mines on Jan. 12, after making a trip to Kyle, S.D. to play Oglala Lakota on Jan. 11.
BLOCKS RANKS: Dakota State remains second in the nation for blocks per game (5.3). Alyson Drooger is third in the nation for blocks per game (3.7) and fourth in total blocks with 41. She recorded eight blocked shots in an exhibition game loss to Mary (N.D.) on Dec. 30. DSU ranks 16th in the nation in total blocks with 59 this season.
DSU OFFENSE RANKS IN NATION: According to the NAIA-DakStats statistical website as of Wednesday, the Lady T's rank fifth in the nation in field goal percentage (46.4 percent) and sixth in free-throw percentage (75 percent). Dakota State is 12th in assists per game (17.9), 33rd in scoring offense per game (71.5), 35th in 3-point field goal percentage (32 percent), 38th in 3-point field goal made per game (5.8) and 46th in total assists (197).
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State lost an exhibition game with NCAA Division II Mary (N.D.) 108-37 in the battle of former DAC-10 members in Bismarck on Dec. 30. The Lady T's last regular-season game was on Dec. 17 as they were defeated by nationally-ranked Briar Cliff (Iowa) 91-74. Midland splits a pair of games in the Kansas Wesleyan Classic last weekend. The Warriors defeated Bethany (Kan.) 51-40 on Dec. 28, but dropped an overtime game with host-team Kansas Wesleyan 74-73 on Dec. 30. Midland is scheduled to play Dakota Wesleyan Wednesday night (tonight) in the GPAC basketball action in Fremont, Neb.
DRAINING 3s: Kylie Westover drained 21 3-pointers through 11 regular-season contests this season. She currently records 132 3-point field goals made, which is fifth most career 3-pointers in DSU Lady T's record book.
249 WINS AND COUNTING: Jeff Dittman recorded his 249th coaching career victory as DSU Lady T's basketball head coach on Dec. 14 in Morris, Minn. He is in his 16th year as the Lady T's basketball coach and 20th overall as head coach (4 years at Hastings). Dittman is currently 249-208 overall record as DSU Lady T's basketball head coach, the most wins by a women's basketball head coach at DSU.
LADY T'S QUICK LEADERS: Kylie Westover leads Lady T's in scoring with 13.3 points per game. She shoots 45 percent from the field. Alyson Drooger averages 10 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. She leads the team and Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) in blocks with an average of 3.7 blocks per game. Yui Onodera accumulates 45 assists this season. She ranks 32nd in the nation in assists per game (4.1). Julie Munson records 15 steals (1.5 steals per game).
