DSU men's basketball continues busy schedule with three games this week

THIS WEEK: Dakota State (12-5 overall record, 1-0 Association of Independent Institutions conference record) continues their action on the road this week. The Trojans visit their long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) (9-11) Wednesday night. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D. Four former Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) members are set to meet at the Civic Center this weekend for the Dakota Tip-off Classic. DSU takes on host-team Jamestown (N.D.) (8-12, 0-2 A.I.I.) on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Jamestown, N.D.
TROJANS VERSUS RANKED TEAMS: Dakota State had faced a national ranked team four times this season, with the most recently victory over then-No. 10 Dordt (Iowa) 83-65 on Jan. 9. The Trojans are 2-3 against teams ranked in the NAIA's 'Top 25' this season. The Trojans are 2-2 against teams versus NAIA's Top 25, including a 61-59 victory over No. 19 Bellevue (Neb.) 61-59 on Dec. 21. DSU suffered two defeats with the nationally-ranked Northwestern (Iowa) - 78-70 at DSU Fieldhouse on Nov. 7 and 77-62 in Orange City, Iowa on Dec. 8.
DSU PLAYERS RECOGNIZED: Two Dakota State men's basketball players received recognition in the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Player of the Week honor. Tyrone Gordon, Jr. was mentioned in the nominations portion announced on Jan. 15. John Lamb was also mentioned in the first edition of the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Jan. 8.
TIP-OFF TOURNAMENT: Four former Dakota Athletic Conference members will meet in Jamestown, N.D. on Jan. 19 and 20 for the Dakota Tip-off Classic, hosted by Jamestown College (N.D.). The Trojans will play Jamestown on Jan. 19 in the semifinals at 7 p.m. The other semifinal match-up features Mayville State (N.D.) and Valley City State (N.D.) at 3 p.m. The semifinals winners will play in the championship game on Jan. 20 at 7 p.m., while the semifinals losers will play in a third-place game at 3 p.m. All games will be held at the Civic Center.
LAST MEETING: The Trojans currently had won two straight meetings with long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan, with the most recent victory on Nov. 10 at the DSU Fieldhouse. Dakota State defeated DWU 68-64 at the DSU Fieldhouse, Trojans' first victory over the Tigers on DSU's home court since Nov. 19, 2002. The last time both teams met at the Corn Palace was on Dec. 19, 2011 where Dakota State came on top by the score of 78-73, ending DWU's 12-game winning streak versus DSU in the series. DSU won the last meeting with Jamestown in the A.I.I. Division II Men's Basketball Conference Postseason Tournament on Feb. 26 in Madison, S.D. The Jimmies swept the season series with the Trojans—58-51 in Jamestown on Jan. 3, 2012 and 71-61 in Madison on Jan. 14, 2012.
DSU VS. GPAC: Dakota State had played eight games against GPAC members in 2012-13. The Trojans are 4-4 against the GPAC, defeating Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.), Morningside (Iowa), Midland (Neb.) and Dordt (Iowa). DSU lost to Northwestern (Iowa) twice, Briar Cliff (Iowa) and Morningside (Iowa). The Trojans will play three more games against the GPAC in 2013, including Dakota Wesleyan, Mount Marty (S.D.) and Midland.
DSU RECEIVES VOTES TO NATIONAL POLL: Dakota State made their fifth straight appearance to the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' 'Top 25' national poll, released on Jan. 15. The Trojans received five votes to the national poll. Two A.I.I. teams are ranked in the Top 25—No. 13 Rochester (Mich.) and No. 20 Valley City State (N.D.). The sixth regular-season edition of the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches 'Top 25' national poll will be announced on Jan. 22.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State went 2-1 last week, including an 83-65 upset victory over then-No. 10 Dordt (Iowa) at DSU Fieldhouse on Jan. 9. The Trojans outscored the Defenders 20-0 in fast-break points. DSU traveled west to visit their former conference rival South Dakota Mines on Jan. 12. The Trojans raced to a double-digits lead midway through the second-half, but the Hardrockers mounted a furious rally to tie the game at 60-60 and forced overtime. SDM outscored the Trojans 15-9 in overtime to earn a 75-69 victory. Dakota State bounced back in the winning column on Jan. 13 with a 111-95 road victory at Oglala Lakota (S.D.). Dakota Wesleyan dropped a pair of road games last week, losing to nationally-ranked Northwestern (Iowa) 77-74 on Jan. 9 and 90-77 at Hastings (Neb.) on Jan. 12. Jamestown split a pair of road games last weekend in western South Dakota. The Jimmies lost to South Dakota Mines 68-39 on Jan. 11 in Rapid City. JC snapped their six-game losing streak with a 96-65 victory at Oglala Lakota (S.D.) on Jan. 12.
DSU QUICK LEADERS: Tyrone Gordon, Jr. leads the team with 16.9 points per game. He shoots 56.4 percent from the field. John Lamb averages 12.8 points per game and nailed down 47 3-pointers this season (31st in the nation). He ranks 15th in the nation in 3-point field goal made per game (2.9). John Lamb records 29 steals (1.8 steals per game). Yusuf Vinson leads the team with 7.9 rebounds per game (38th in the nation). He ranks 35th in the nation in free-throw percentage (80 percent). Terrell Newton leads the team with 11 blocked shots. Dakota State is 14th in the nation in assists per game (16.3), 19th in field goal percentage (47.5 percent) and 37th in scoring margin (+7.7).
