DSU indoor track and field competes in two different meets this weekend

THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University indoor track and field teams will take partial members to the two-day Iowa State Open this weekend in Ames, Iowa. On Saturday, the majority of DSU's track teams travel to Wayne, Neb. to compete in the Wildcat Open.
IOWA STATE OPEN: Dakota State will be taking 13 athletes to the Iowa State open this weekend. The meet takes place in the Lied Recreational Center and features numerous quality schools from all levels. Stacey Berg, D'Artist Williams and Seth Boomsma are scheduled to run in the 60-meter race. Berg will also run in the 200-meter dash. Ryan Gimbel competes in the men's weight throw. Stephanie Uher, Gabe Samuelson and Mark Moeller each will race in the 400-meter and 600-meter runs. Steve Selchert, Andy Quenzer and Stephanie Warnke are scheduled to run in the 800-meter run. Summer Bronson will race in two events – the 60-meter hurdles and 400-meter dash. Andy Coy is scheduled to run in the men's one-mile run.
WILDCAT OPEN: The Wildcat Open is hosted by NCAA Division II Wayne State College. The meet will be held at WSC's Recreation Center in Wayne, Neb. The first event takes place with the weight throw, long jump and high jump at 10:30 a.m. The first running event is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. with the 60-meter hurdles. The last event is expected to start at 3:40 p.m. with the 4 x 400-meter relay.
RECORD BREAKING: Ryan Gimbel continues to break his career personal and Dakota State University school record in the men's weight throw. He improved his personal best measurement of 49 feet and 8.5 inches. He placed second and posted the best collegiate athlete (defeated all college athletes in the event) on Jan. 12 at the Dordt Invitational in Sioux Center, Iowa.
LAST TIME OUT: Fourteen different Dakota State University individuals placed in the top 10 on Jan. 12 at the Dordt (Iowa) Indoor Track and Field Invitational in Sioux Center, Iowa. Four DSU women's runners placed in the top 10 in the 800-meter run, led by Stephanie Uher with a time of 2:25.98. Stephanie Warnke was fifth in 2:28.24. Kayla Sveen finished eighth in 2:31.80 and Brooke Fritz placed ninth with a time of 2:32.11. Seth Boomsma captured the men's 55-meter dash title with an automatic qualifying time of 6.36 seconds (qualified for 60-meter dash event). D'Artist Williams was sixth in 6.64 seconds. Summer Bronson placed fifth in the women's 55-meer hurdles with a time of 9.08 seconds.
COACHES' CORNER: Dakota State University track and field head coach Buzz Stevenson has been involved in sports since his high school days in Ipswich, S.D. and has been a coach and teacher for more than 45 years. While at DSU, Stevenson has garnered 14 South Dakota-Iowa Conference Coach of the Year titles and two NAIA Great Plains regional cross-country coach of the year awards. He has accumulated 14 SDIC championships and his athletes have produced 57 All-American honors. Anthony Drealan is in his second year as an assistant coach in track and field. Cody Foreman is also an assistant track and field coach for the Trojans. Matt Fideler is the DSU track and field student assistant coach.
UP NEXT: Dakota State heads to Storm Lake, Iowa on Jan. 26 to compete in the Buena Vista Open.
