Trojans prepare for Buena Vista Indoor Track & Field Open Saturday

THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University indoor track and field teams returns back to action Saturday as they prepare their first of the three trips to Storm Lake, Iowa this winter. The Trojans compete in the Buena Vista Open.
BUENA VISTA OPEN: Buena Vista Open takes place at the Lamberti Recreation Center/Dennis Young Track. The first field events – weight throw, long jump, high jump and pole vault – takes place at 9 a.m. The first running event is slated to start at 11 a.m. with the 4 x 800-meter relay. The last event is scheduled at 3:20 p.m. with the 4 x 400-meter relay.
THREE TRIPS TO STORM LAKE: Dakota State will be taking three trips to the Lamberti Recreation Center/Dennis Young Track in Storm Lake, Iowa this indoor track and field season, including this Saturday. The Trojans will be back in Storm Lake again for the Dennis Young Classic on Saturday, Feb. 2. On Feb. 16, DSU will compete in the Buena Vista Relays, which features additional relays events.
COY TABS AS A.I.I. PLAYER OF THE WEEK: The Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) selected Dakota State's Andy Coy as its Male Athlete of the Week honor last Monday. Coy, a senior from Hill City, S.D., produced a NAIA national qualifying time in the men's one-mile run at the Iowa State Open on Jan. 19. He clocked a time of four minutes and 13.53 seconds in his first meet of the season. The time is also the current fastest time in the NAIA as he claimed the one-mile title that featured 59 runners from all school levels. Coy qualified for his fourth straight NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships.
NAIA INDOOR TRACK & FIELD QUALIFIERS: Dakota State currently has three athletes qualified for the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Seth Boomsma qualified for the men's 60-meter dash. He tied the fastest time in the NAIA with a DSU school record time of 6.77 seconds for a third-place finish at the Iowa State Open on Jan. 19. Andy Coy won the men's one-mile run at the Iowa State Open in 4:13.53. Stephanie Uher recorded a national qualifying time in the women's 600-meter run. She clocked a time of 1:28.43 at the Iowa State Open.
LAST TIME OUT: The Trojans competed in two different meets last weekend. Three DSU athletes had set a national qualifying time at the Iowa State Open – Seth Boomsma in the men's 60-meter dash, Andy Coy in the men's one-mile run and Stephanie Uher in the women's 600-meter run. Mark Moeller was just about .50 seconds off for a national qualifying mark in the men's 600-yard run with a time 1:14.81. The majority of the DSU indoor track and field team members competed in the Wildcat Open. Zach Ely captured the individual title in the men's 60-meter hurdles in 8.99 seconds. Kayla Sveen secured the women's 600-meter run title with a time of 1:46.82. Taylor Hauge placed third in the men's 1000-meter run. He recorded a time of 2:47.38.
COACHES' CORNER: Dakota State University track and field head coach Buzz Stevenson has been involved in sports since his high school days in Ipswich, S.D. and has been a coach and teacher for more than 45 years. While at DSU, Stevenson has garnered 14 South Dakota-Iowa Conference Coach of the Year titles and two NAIA Great Plains regional cross-country coach of the year awards. He has accumulated 14 SDIC championships and his athletes have produced 57 All-American honors. Anthony Drealan is in his second year as an assistant coach in track and field. Cody Foreman is also an assistant track and field coach for the Trojans. Matt Fideler is the DSU track and field student assistant coach.
UP NEXT: Dakota State competes in two different meets next weekend. Partial DSU members will compete in the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational, hosted by the University of Nebraska. The meet takes place in Lincoln, Neb. on Feb. 1 and Feb. 2. The majority of the Trojan indoor track and field members will be taking their second straight trip to Storm Lake, Iowa to participate in the Dennis Young Classic.
