Trojans play pair of games this week, hosts Jamestown (N.D.) Saturday

THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University men's basketball team(15-7 overall record, 2-2 Association of Independent Institutions conference record) plays a pair of games this week. The Trojans visit their in-state rival Mount Marty (7-16 overall record) on Tuesday night. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. at the Cimpl Arena in Yankton, S.D. DSU returns home on Saturday to kick off their final two-game home stand at DSU Fieldhouse. Dakota State welcomes Jamestown (N.D.) (11-13, 2-3 A.I.I.). The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. in Madison, S.D
DSU SECURES THIRD STRAIGHT WINNING SEASONS IN 21 YEARS: After recording a 90-69 home victory over Trinity Bible (N.D.) on Jan. 26, Dakota State had secured their third straight winning seasons for the first time in 21 years. The last time DSU had three straight winning seasons was from 1989-92 seasons. DSU had four consecutive winning season rom 1989-93 seasons.
HOME COOKING: Dakota State only lost two times in 10 home games this season (8-2 record).. The Trojans had defeated Oglala Lakota (S.D.), Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.), Morningside (Iowa), Presentation (S.D.), Bellevue (Neb.), Midland (Neb.), Dordt (Iowa) and Trinity Bible (N.D.). DSU lost twice at home to both nationally-ranked teams—No. 7 Northwestern (Iowa) on Nov. 7 and No. 24 Valley City State (N.D.) on Jan. 24. Since head coach Gary Garner arrival at Dakota State, the Trojans had recorded a winning record at the DSU Fieldhouse in each year (35-18 home record since 2009-10 season). DSU had at least eight wins at home in the last four years (11 home wins in 2011-12 season).
LAST MEETING: Dakota State defeated Mount Marty in both teams' last meeting on Jan. 31, 2012 at the DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans held the Lancers' starters to 13 points in 67-49 victory. DSU won the last four meetings in the series meeting with Mount Marty. Jamestown's strong finish defeated Dakota State in both teams' last meeting on Jan. 19 as part of the Dakota Tip-off Classic. The Trojans had their biggest lead of the game at 39-30 early in the second-half, but the Jimmies outscored the Trojans 19-8 in the final 8:23 of the game. The last time DSU defeated JC at the DSU Fieldhouse was on Feb. 26, 2012 in the State Farm A.I.I. Division II Men's Basketball Conference Championship game. The Trojans defeated JC by the score of 80-71, where the Jimmies were ranked No. 8 at that time.
DSU RECEIVES VOTES TO NATIONAL POLL: DSU made their sixth straight appearance to the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball national poll, announced Tuesday (Jan. 22). The Trojans received votes' recognition with five votes for the third consecutive weeks. Valley City State (N.D.) had dropped four spots from No. 20 to No. 24 after splitting a pair of games in the Dakota Tip-off Classic in Jamestown, N.D. The seventh edition of the national poll will be announced on next Tuesday, Jan. 29.
BALANCE OFFENSE ATTACK: Six Dakota State University men's basketball players are averaging in double digits this season. Tyrone Gordon, Jr. averages 14.8 points per game, followed by John Lamb with 12.3 points per game and Luke Lamb with 11.2 points per game. Terrell Newton and Yusuf Vinson each average 10.8 points per game. Cameron Krump scores 10.1 points per game for the Trojans.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State split a pair of games at DSU Fieldhouse last week. The Trojans dropped a 63-54 decision to No. 24 Valley City State (N.D.) in an A.I.I. conference game on Jan. 24. Tied at 48-48, the Vikings closed the game with a 15-6 in the last 3:23 of the game. DSU bounced back in the winning column on Jan. 26. Five different Dakota State men's basketball players scored in double digits to defeat Trinity Bible (N.D.) 90-69 to secure their third consecutive winning seasons for the first time in 21 years. Mount Marty went 0-2 on the road last week. The Lancers dropped a 77-54 contest at the Corn Palace versus Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) on Jan. 23. Nebraska Wesleyan held Mount Marty to their season-low total points with a 57-38 win on Jan. 26 in Lincoln, Neb. After winning the Dakota Tip-off Classic, Jamestown went 1-1 for the week. The Jimmies lost to Mayville State (N.D.) in overtime at the Civic Center in Jamestown, N.D. The Comets outscored JC 15-9 in overtime for a 65-59 victory. Jamestown routed Oglala Lakota (S.D.) on Jan. 27 by the score of 113-59.
INDEPENDENT SPEAKING: Dakota State remains third in the latest A.I.I. weekly ranking as of Monday, Jan. 28. The top four in the A.I.I. weekly ranking had remained unchanged as Rochester (Mich.) holds the No. 1 spot with a 15-3 overall record. Valley City State is at No. 2 with a 17-5 overall record. Ashford (Iowa) stays at No. 4 spot (16-7 record). Northern New Mexico had moved up from No. 6 to No. 5 with a 9-15 record. Jamestown (N.D.) dropped to No. 6 (11-13 record). Wilberforce (Ohio) is seventh (7-16), followed by Mayville State (N.D.) at No. 8 spot (6-15 record). The A.I.I. Division II Men's Basketball Conference Postseason Tournament will be held in Jamestown, N.D. on Feb. 22-24.
DSU QUICK LEADERS: Tyrone Gordon, Jr. leads the team with 14.8 points per game for the Trojans. He shoots 52.7 percent from the field. John Lamb averages 12.3 points per game and leads the team in assists with 65 (3.1 assists per game). He records 41 steals (47th in the nation) this season (2.0 steals per game-44th in the nation). He ranks 14th in the nation in 3-ponters made per game (2.9) and 19th in total 3-point field goals made (60). Yusuf Vinson accumulates a total of 155 rebounds with an average of 7.4 rebounds per game. He is 37th in the nation in offensive rebounds per game (2.7) and 50th in free-throw percentage (77.9 percent) Terrell Newton leads the team in blocked shots with 15 (0.8 blocks per game).
