Bartel to receive Terry Ryan Distinguished Service Award Saturday

Steve BartelMADISON, S.D. – Long-time Dakota State University employee Steve Bartel has been involved with DSU Athletics in variety of duties for many years.  He will receive the Terry Ryan Distinguished Service Award during halftime of the Trojans-Jamestown men's basketball game at the DSU Fieldhouse Saturday night.

Bartel, a 1978 Dakota State University graduate, began working at DSU in 1981.  For the past 31 years, he has been working with the Student Services staff involved in student activities and residence life.  One of his duties includes the accommodations for pre-season camps and individual housing needs of DSU student-athletes.

Throughout these years, Bartel has volunteered his time working at the scoring table in a variety of capacities – most recently managing the official scoring book.  In addition, he volunteered to officiate youth tournament games and has worked concessions during the games. 

Bartel has contributed to the Alan Ende Memorial Scholarship for track/cross country athletes since its inception in the late 1980's. 

He had asked the DSU softball coach to allow Bartel the privilege to throw batting practice to the women's team periodically since 1976.

Bartel also served as the assistant DSU volleyball coach in the late 1980's and early 1990's. 

He continues to be a loyal and consistent fan of Dakota State Athletics since his arrival at Dakota State years ago. 

Steve and his wife Terri reside in Madison, S.D.  They have three children – Jeremy, Justin and Kristen, two daughter-in-laws – Megan (Swier) Bartel and Billie (Thurow) Bartel and a grandchild – Rilynn with another expected soon.
