DSU indoor track & field teams compete in Dennis Young Classic Saturday

STORM LAKE, Iowa – Dakota State took the majority of the indoor track and field team members to the Dennis Young Classic meet Saturday at the Lamberti Recreation Center/Dennis Young Track. It was the second straight Saturday at DSU had made the trip to Storm Lake, hosted by NCAA Division III Buena Vista University.
The DSU men's 4 x 800-meter relay team – Mark Moeller, Steve Selchert, Andy Quenzer and Gabe Samuelson – captured a runner-up honor in the event. The relay team clocked a time of eight minutes and 11.52 seconds. On the women's side, Dakota State (Kayla Sveen, Brooke Fritz, Victoria Sopko and Stephanie Warnke) placed fourth with a time of 9:58.06.
Nic Penning recorded a time of 15:58.99 for a third-place finish in the men's 5000-meter run.
Ryan Gimbel continues to improve his personal and DSU school record in the men's weight throw. He threw a measurement of 50 feet and .75 inches for a fifth-place finish, increasing his previous old record by .25 inches. Trevor Van Tilbrug was 20th with a measurement of 42 feet and 11 inches.
Gimbel threw a measurement of 12.21 meters (40.06 feet) for a 12th-place finish in the men's shot put.
Sveen finished the women's 600-meter run with a time of 1:44.05 for a fifth-place finish. Moeller placed 10th on the men's side with a time of 1:25.54. Quenzer clocked a time of 1:27.91 (15th place) and Truman placed 20th (1:29.73).
Warnke ran a time of 3:12.89 to earn a sixth-place finish in the women's 1000-meter run. Anastasia Asimakopoulos was 17th in 3:47.86.
In the men's 800-meter run, Selchert placed seventh in 2:00.43. Jared Sutton finished with a time of 2:12.21 (35th place).
Stacey Berg clocked a time of 23.37 seconds for a seventh-place finish in the men's 200-meter dash. Jared Truman finished tied for 21st with a time of 24.04 seconds. Other DSU men's runners in the 200-meter dash are: David Sotir (30th – 24.40 seconds); Justin Templeton (36th – 24.72 seconds); Chad Pelkofer (42nd – 25.45 seconds) and Trevor Reddick (43rd – 25.47 seconds).
Berg ran a time of 6.71 seconds in the men's 55-meter dash (11th place tie). Kris Dearie was in a 21st-place tie with a time of 6.84 seconds. Trevor Reddick finished 47th in 7.22 seconds.
In the men's long jump, Berg leaped a measurement of 6.33 meters (20.77 inches). He placed 11th in the event.
Sotir clocked a time of 8.48 seconds for an 18th-place finish in the men's 55-meter hurdles. Zach Ely was 20th (8.53 seconds). Pelkofer placed 21st (8.59 seconds). Templeton recorded a time of 8.85 seconds for a 26th-place finish.
In the women's weight throw, Ashley Currey placed 19th with a measurement of 9.98 meters (32.74 feet). Shayna Dwyer was 26th (9.71 meters – 31.86 feet).
Dwyer threw a shot put measurement of 11.78 meters (38.65 feet) to place 17th. Currey was 28th with a throw measurement of 10.45 meters (34.28 feet).
Asimakopoulos placed 20th with a time of 6:12.65 in the women's one-mile run.
Sopko ran a time of 1:07.04 for a 21st-place finish in the women's 400-meter dash. On the men's side, Pelkofer was 26th (55.01 seconds). Templeton clocked a time of 55.78 seconds for a 28th-place finish. Sotir recorded a time of 56.61 seconds (29th-place finish).
Dakota State heads to Sioux Center, Iowa next Saturday (Feb. 9). The Trojans participate in the Dordt Invitational at the DC's Recreation Center.
