Trojans kick off 2013 baseball season Wednesday at Midland (Neb.)

THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University baseball team (0-0 overall record) kicks off their 2013 campaign on Wednesday afternoon. The Trojans visit Midland (Neb.) (4-2) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference in a doubleheader. First game is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. at the Moller Field in Fremont, Neb.
ROAD GAMES TO START 2013 SEASON: Dakota State will be playing 26 straight games away from their home field—Flynn Field—to start the 2013 season. The Trojans will be making trips to Nebraska, Kansas, and Kentucky in a one-month span before returning home in mid-March. DSU's baseball home opener is slated for March 21 against in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan.
2012 SEASON IN REVIEW: Dakota State produced an overall record of 28-28, 25-wins improvement from 2011 season. The Trojans were the last team to qualify for the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Baseball Conference Postseason Tournament in San Marcos, Calif. DSU recorded a 3-2 upset over tournament's No. 1 seed and host-team Cal State San Marcos in the opening round and suffered a 13-0 defeat to Mayville State (N.D.) in the second round. Dakota State went on to win two straight elimination games, defeating Thomas (Ga.) 8-6 and Arizona Christian 4-1 to earn a spot in the A.I.I. championship game an earned one of the two A.I.I.'s automatic bid to the NAIA Baseball Championship Opening Round. The Trojans dropped a 9-2 contest to Arizona Christian in the conference championship game. DSU was in the Hutchinson (Kan.) bracket of the NAIA Baseball Championship Opening Round. The Trojans were eliminated from postseason play as they dropped a pair of games to host-team Tabor (Kan.) 9-7 and No. 17 Judson (Ill.) 9-4. Dakota State had three players named to A.I.I. All-Conference teams. Jason Hershfield and Anyelo Roman were name to the first-team All-Conference, while Max Garza earned second-team All-Conference honor.
2012 DSU BASEBALL TEAM RECOGNIZED: The 2012 DSU baseball team was recognized during the halftime of the men's basketball game versus Valley City State (N.D.) on Jan. 24 at DSU Fieldhouse. They were recognized with an unveiling of the national tournament banner that will be hung up in the DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans qualified for the NAIA Baseball National Tournament Opening Round last May.
ROSTER BREAKDOWN: Dakota State have 32 players listed on their baseball roster. The Trojans have 10 seniors, 11 juniors, 2 sophomores and 11 freshmen on the team.
2013 SCHEDULE: The Trojans have 53 scheduled games on their 2013 schedule. Dakota State will spend their first week of March in Kentucky with visits at Asbury, Kentucky State, Brescia, Saint Catherine, Lindsey Wilson and Campbellsville. The Trojans also will make trips to Concordia (Neb.), Mount Marty (S.D.), Morningside (Iowa), Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) twice, Briar Cliff (Iowa) and NCAA Division I South Dakota State. DSU, a member of the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.), will play in the A.I.I./Frontier Conference Tournament (teams included Dakota State, Dickinson State, Jamestown, Mayville State and Valley City State) from May 1-4 in Jamestown, N.D. The winner of the conference tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NAIA Baseball Championship Opening Round at nine different campus locations selected by the NAIA. The winner of the national tournament's opening round will advance to the Avista-NAIA World Series in Lewiston, Idaho from May 24-31.
2013 DSU HOME SCHEDULE: DSU is scheduled to play 11 home games at the Flynn Field this season. The Trojans are slated to host Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) on March 21, Mount Marty (S.D.) on March 26, Mayville State (N.D.) on March 29-30, Morningside (Iowa) on April 8 and Briar Cliff (Iowa) on April 17.
RECORD-BREAKING: The Trojans had set numerous records in the DSU Baseball record in 2012. Jason Hershfield, Kyle Holland, Chaz Palmer and Anyelo Roman had tied the school record for most games played in a single season with 56 games. Anyelo Roman set school records in a single season with 191 at-bats, 70 hits, 138 total bases, 17 home runs and 55 runs batted in (RBIs). He is one short of tying the DSU school record for most career home runs set by Shea Tonkin with 18 from 2005-2007.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: After the final statistics were reported after the 2012 season, Dakota State ranked 16th in the nation in home runs per game (0.9). Anyelo Roman was seventh in the nation in home runs per game (0.3) and home runs (17). He was 10th in the nation in slugging percentage of .723.

UP NEXT: Dakota State plays a four-game series with Saint Mary (Kan.) on Saturday and Sunday. The doubleheader kicks off at 1 p.m. on each day in Leavenworth, Kan. On Monday, the Trojans head to Peru State (Neb.) for a nine-inning game in Peru, Neb. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
