Warriors sweep Trojans in DSU's baseball season opener

FREMONT, Neb. – The Dakota State kicked off their 2013 campaign Wednesday afternoon at the Moller Field, visiting Midland (Neb.) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference. The Warriors produced a pair of 4-run third inning to sweep the Trojans by the score of 8-2 and 7-0.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 0-2. Midland won their fourth straight game to raise their overall record to 6-2.
Game 1 – Midland (Neb.) 8, Dakota State (S.D.) 2
With two runners on base with one out in the bottom first inning, the Warriors scored its first run of the game by Miguel Ramallo's RBI single to earn a 1-0 lead.
Dakota State tied the game at 1-1 in the top second inning by Ryan Bouricer's solo home run.
Ramallo hit a grand slam with one out in the bottom third frame as Midland regained their lead at 5-1.
In the top fifth inning, Rays Roman hit a solo home run as the Trojans cut Warriors' lead to 5-2.
Sean Urzendowski recorded a 3-run home run in the bottom sixth inning as MU widen their lead to 8-2.
DSU could not convert their scoring opportunity in the final inning as the Warriors secured the victory.
Rays Roman had two hits and an RBI in the game for Dakota State, including a home run and a single. Bourcier had a home run and an RBI. Anyelo Roman, Danny Flahie and Corey Pasichnyk each had a single.
Ramallo went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Warriors. He recorded a grand slam and five RBIs. Urzendowski added a home run and recorded three RBIs. Andrew Cassidy, Nate Bence and Zach Kinsella each had a single.
MU outhit the Trojans 8-6 in the game.
DSU left five runners on bases. Midland had seven runners left on bases.
Kevin Madera recorded the loss on the pitching mound for the Trojans. He tossed three innings and allowed five runs on five hits. Madera struck out five MU's batters. Drew Sweeter pitched three innings in relief. He gave up three runs on three hits and recorded two strikeouts.
Dillon Cotner (2-0) picked up the victory for the Warriors. He pitched for five innings and gave up two runs on five hits. Cotner struck out seven DSU's batters. Josh Rolls tossed the last two innings and limited DSU to one hit.
Game 2 – Midland (Neb.) 7, Dakota State (S.D.) 0
Midland earned the first lead of the game at 1-0 in the bottom second inning as Dylan Steyer hit a solo home run.
The Warriors exploded for four runs in the bottom third frame. Bence hit a 2-RBI double to extend MU's lead to 3-0. Steyer added a 2-RBI triple to expand MU's lead to 5-0.
Bence hit an RBI single in the bottom fourth inning to make it 6-0 in favor of the Warriors. Vinni Orsi added an RBI double to make it 7-0 Midland.
The Trojans were unable to score in the game as MU sealed the game by limiting DSU to one hit.
Kyle Holland had a single for Dakota State.
Steyer recorded a home run, a triple and three RBIs for the Warriors. Bence and Orsi each added a double, a single and recorded two RBIs. Jake Loftus and Shane O'Connor each had a single.
Midland had eight hits in the game.
Mike Chartier tossed four innings in loss for DSU. He allowed seven runs – one unearned run – on seven hits. Jordan Sovich pitched one shutout inning in relief. Austin Weber pitched the sixth inning and gave up a hit. He recorded two strikeouts.
Tyler Brungart (2-0) pitched a complete game victory for the Warriors. He allowed one hit and struck out eight DSU's hiiters.
Dakota State continues their action on the road this weekend. The Trojans travel to Leavenworth, Kan. to play a four-game series with Saint Mary. The doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. each day on Saturday and Sunday. On Monday, DSU heads to Peru State (Neb.) for a nine-inning game. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Peru, Neb.
