DSU Baseball falls short to No. 5 Rogers State (Okla.)

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Dakota State faced their second opponent from the Sooner Athletic Conference in baseball doubleheader action Saturday at the Diamond Sports Complex. The Trojans dropped a pair of games to the nationally-ranked Rogers State (Okla.) 3-1 and 9-4.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 3-6. Rogers State, No. 5 in the NAIA Baseball Coaches' Preseason Poll, won their eighth straight game to raise their overall record to 14-3.
The Hillcats appeared in the NAIA World Series last season after winning the Hutchinson (Kan.) bracket in the NAIA Baseball National Tournament Opening Round. The Trojans were also in the Hutchinson bracket.
Game 1 - #5 Rogers State (Okla.) 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 - BOX SCORE
Colton Campbell and Tyler Wheeler each recorded an RBI single to give Rogers State a 2-0 lead in the opening inning.
The Hillcats added a run in the bottom fourth frame to extend their lead to 3-0. Wheeler and Ramcy Lora hit back-to-back singles with one out. After a fly-out by Emmanuel De La Cruz to advance Wheeler to third base, Blake Heston hit an RBI single to score Wheeler to expand their lead by three runs.
Ryan Bouricer hit a solo home run on a 2-2 count and one out in the top of the sixth inning as DSU trimmed Hillcats' lead to 3-1. He recorded his second home run of the season for the Trojans.
DSU was unable to convert their scoring opportunity in the top seventh inning as they left two runners on base.
Bouricer was 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run, a single and an RBI for Dakota State. Kyle Holland added two singles. Rays Roman, Anyelo Roman, Danny Flahie, Chaz Palmer and Nathan Wieneke each had a hit.
Wheeler had two singles and an RBI for Rogers State. Campbell and Heston each added a single and an RBI. Eric Baker, Hector Rivera and Lora each had a hit.
Dakota State outhit Rogers State 9-7.
DSU left nine runners on bases. The Hillcats had five runners left on base.
Jordan Sovich (0-2) suffered the loss on the pitching mound for the Trojans. He tossed six innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. Sovich struck out five Rogers State's batters.
Shawn Spainhoward (3-1) recorded the victory for the Hillcats. He pitched five innings and gave up three runs on six hits. Spainhoward recorded five strikeouts. T.J. Law worked the last two innings in relief to notch his second save of the season. He allowed three hits and recorded two strikeouts.
Game 2 - #5 Rogers State (Okla.) 9, Dakota State (S.D.) 4 - BOX SCORE
Rogers State scored its first runs of the game in the bottom second inning. The Hillcats scored first caused by DSU's defensive error. Alex Cochran added an RBI sacrifice fly to score Lora to give Rogers State a 2-0 lead.
Rays Roman hit a single to open the top third frame. He swiped to second base. He advanced to third base after Anyelo Roman hit a fly-out to right field. Rays Roman scored the Trojans' first run of the game by McKenzie Matthews' passed ball to cut Hillcats' lead to 2-1.
Rogers State exploded for four runs in the bottom third inning to widen their lead. Hector Rivera opened with a single. With one out and runner on first base, Campbell produced an RBI triple to score Rivera to give Hillcats a 3-1 lead. Wheeler added an RBI single to score Campbell for a 4-1 lead in favor of Rogers State. Nick Malter hit an RBI single followed by Matthews' RBI double to extend Hillcats' lead to 6-1.
RSU's Wheeler hit a 3-run home runs in the bottom fourth frame to make it 9-1.
The Trojans scored twice in the top fifth inning caused by Hillcats' defensive miscues. DSU trimmed Rogers State's lead to 9-3.
DSU added another run in the top-half of the sixth inning by another RSU's defensive error. The Hillcats' lead was reduced to 9-4.
Rogers State sealed the game in the final inning as the Trojans went three-and-out in the top of the seventh inning.
Rays Roman produced three hits and scored twice in the game for Dakota State. He recorded a stolen base. Flahie had a double, a single and an RBI. Holland had a double and two runs scored. Bourcier had a single.
Wheeler was 2-for-2 at the plate with a home run, a single and recorded four RBIs for Rogers State. Rivera and Matthews each added two hits. Andrew Garrison, Campbell, Austin Culwell, Lora and Malter each had a hit.
The Hillcats outhit the Trojans 11-7. Rogers State committed five errors in the game compared to DSU three errors.
DSU left nine runners on base. RSU had seven runners left on base.
Kevin Madera (0-2) took the loss for Dakota State. He pitched 2 2/3 innings and gave up six runs (one unearned) on five hits. Josh Grissom worked 1 1/3 innings in relief. He allowed three unearned runs on three hits. Jamie Jorgensen pitched two innings and gave up three hits.
Kyle Duncan (3-0) recorded the victory for Rogers State. He tossed five innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits. Duncan struck out seven DSU's batters. Zach Tyson pitched the final two innings of the game as he gave up an unearned run on one hit. He recorded four strikeouts.
Dakota State will attempt to bounce back in the winning column on Sunday afternoon. The Trojans will play a single game with Ottawa (Kan.) at the Diamond Sports Complex in Claremore, Okla. The first pitch is set for 12 noon.
