Trojans drop pair of baseball games in Owensboro, Ky.

OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Dakota State University baseball team could not overcome St. Catharine's (Ky.) 10-run first inning in the first game Monday at the Schadler Field, hosted by Brescia (Ky.) University. SC won by the score of 14-2. In the second game, Brescia jumped to an early lead and held off the Trojans' late rally 7-5.
Dakota State suffered their fifth straight defeat and dropped their overall record to 3-9. St. Catharine is 12-6 overall record and Brescia is 4-9 overall record.
Game 1 - St. Catharine (Ky.) 14, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 - BOX SCORE
The Patriots produced 10 runs on six hits in the opening inning to earn a 10-0 lead over the Trojans. DSU's defense committed five errors in the bottom of the first inning.
St. Catharine added three runs in the bottom third frame to extend their lead. SCC hit back-to-back-to-back RBI double from Tyler Mischel, Adrian Garcia and Josh Whitmer to widen their lead to 13-0.
Dakota State broke their scoring drought in the top of the sixth inning. J.D. Farley was hit-by-pitch to open the inning. He advanced to second base by a wild pitch from SCC's CJ Gant. Farley stole for third base. Corey Pasichnyk hit an RBI single to score Farley to cut Patriots' lead to 13-1.
SCC added a run in the bottom sixth inning. Joel Cooper reached on base by a walk. He advanced to third base by a passed ball. Joey Andrada recorded an RBI ground out to score Cooper to extend SCC's lead to 14-1.
DSU's Andy Lee scored by a wild pitch from Chase Dial in the top of the seventh inning to trim SCC's lead to 14-2.
Lee, Ryan Bourcier and Pasichnyk each had a single for the Trojans. Pasichnyk produced an RBI. Farley swiped one base.
Whitmer and Mischel each had two doubles for St. Catharine. Garica added a double. Mischel and Andrada each had three RBIs. Garcia and Whitmer each added two RBIs.
The Patriots outhit the Trojans 13-3 in the game.
DSU had eight runners left on base. SCC left six runners on base.
Mike Chartier (0-2) recorded the loss on the pitching mound for the Trojans. He tossed 2/3 innings and allowed 10 runs (eight unearned) on six hits. Seth Rockafellow worked 3 1/3 innings in relief. He gave up three runs on five hits. Evan Steemken pitched the fifth and sixth innings. He allowed a run on two hits.
Saint Catharine used four different pitchers in the game. Dylan Shoffner started the game, pitching the first two innings and gave up a hit. Bruce Tolliver (2-2) picked up the victory as he tossed two shutout innings. He recorded six strikeouts and gave up three walks. Gant worked two innings in relief and allowed a run on two hits. Dial pitched the seventh inning and gave up a run on one hit.
Game 2 – Brescia (Ky.) 7, Dakota State (S.D.) 5 - BOX SCORE
The Bearcats scored three times in the bottom first inning to earn an early lead. With runners on third and second bases, Brescia hit back-to-back RBI sacrifice fly to give BU a 2-0 lead. Logan Rascoe added an RBI double to extend the Bearcats' lead to 3-0.
Brescia scored a run caused by DSU's defensive miscue in the bottom third frame to make it 4-0.
DSU got on board in the top of the fourth inning. The Trojans opened the inning with back-to-back singles by Kyle Holland and Danny Flahie. With two outs, Anyelo Roman hit an RBI double to score Holland as the Trojans cut BU's lead to 4-1.
Alex Hegge hit a 2-RBI single in the bottom fourth inning to extend Brescia's lead to 6-1.
Dakota State mounted a rally in the top of the sixth frame with four runs scored. Nathan Wieneke opened the inning with a double. Holland hit an RBI single to score Wieneke to cut Trojans' deficit to 6-2. Flahie was hit-by-pitch. After Bourcier's fly-out to right field to advance Holland to third base and Flahie to second base, Anyelo Roman produced a 2-RBI single to score Holland and Flahie to reduce BU's lead to 6-4. Anyelo Roman added a run by a passed ball by BU's Tim Adams to make it 6-5 in favor of the Bearcats.
Brescia scored a run in the bottom sixth frame to extend their lead to 7-5.
The Trojans could not convert their scoring opportunity in the final inning as they went three-and-out.
Anyelo Roman went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, a single and recorded three RBIs for Dakota State. Holland added three singles, an RBI and scored twice. He had a stolen base. Wieneke had a double and a run scored. Flahie recorded a hit and a run scored.
Hegge had two hits and three RBIs for the Bearcats. Rascoe added a double and an RBI. Nate Crocker, Jordan Rhodes and Brady Reese each had a hit.
Brescia recorded eight stolen bases in the game. Hegge and Crocker each swiped two bases. Rhodes, McHatton, Reese and Stewart each had a stolen base.
DSU outhit the Bearcats 7-6 in the game. The Trojans committed three defensive errors.
Anyelo Roman (0-1) tossed a complete game loss for Dakota State. He allowed seven runs (four unearned) on six hits. He struck out nine Brescia's batters.
Cody Morris (1-1) recorded the victory for the Bearcats. He pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up five runs on seven hits. Morris struck out seven DSU's batters. Zach McLean recorded his first save of the season as he pitched a shutout 1 2/3 innings.
Dakota State attempts to snap their losing streak as they will face St. Catharine and Brescia again on Tuesday. The Trojans play the Patriots at 10 a.m., followed by Brescia at 12:30 p.m. Both games will be held at the Edelen-Haydon Field in Springfield, Ky.
