March 4, 2013
MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota State University men's basketball team left the DSU Fieldhouse Monday morning for their second straight trip to the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Tournament in Point Lookout, Mo. The Trojans play the national's No. 5 seed Warner Pacific (Ore.) on Thursday night at 9:15 p.m.
Dakota State continues their historic season in the NAIA National Tournament. The Trojans had set the school record with 22 victories (previous old mark was 20 victories, which happened twice in 1990-91 and 1966-67 seasons). In addition, DSU is making their second straight national tournament appearance for the first time in school history, third overall national tournament appearances (1992, 2012 and 2013). Dakota State recorded their best start (7-1 record) for the first time since 1966-67 season (9-1 record to start the season).
The Trojans qualified for the NAIA national tournament after capturing the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Division II Men's Basketball Conference Tournament in Jamestown, N.D. on Feb. 22-24. DSU defeated Northern New Mexico, Valley City State (N.D.) and Jamestown (N.D.) to claim their second straight conference tournament champion (DSU won the conference tournament last year in Madison).
The NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Tournament kicks off on Wednesday morning at 8:30 a.m. There will be eight first-round games on Wednesday and Thursday, and continues with 'Sweet Sixteen' round games on Friday and quarterfinal games on Saturday. The semifinals take place on next Monday with the championship game set for next Tuesday night (March 12).
