Athletic Scholarships
Richard & Judy Anderson Scholarship
This scholarship was established in October of 2002 by the generosity of Dick Anderson. Dick graduated in 1963 from Dakota State (then-General Beadle). He was an outstanding football and basketball student-athlete. In 1963, he was named Athlete of the Year. After graduating, Dick had an amazing football coaching career in six different high schools in four states, winning over 149 games. He was named Nebraska's Coach of the Year in 1986. Currently, Dick is a very successful businessman in Lake Havasu, Arizona. The student-athlete(s) that receive this award must participate in the sport of football.
Roger and Melodee Anderson Scholarship
Roger and Melodee Anderson established this scholarship in October 2002. Roger attended DSU (then-General Beadle) from 1961 through 1964. Roger was an outstanding student-athlete who participated in football all of those years until he signed with the Omaha Mustangs, a semi-pro team in the Continental League, in 1964. Roger was a very successful business man in Nebraska where he owned multiple automotive dealerships. The student-athlete(s) must participate in the sport of football.
Omar Appelwick Memorial Scholarship
The Omar Appelwick scholarship was instituted to benefit three outstanding athletic scholars attending Dakota State each year. Mr. Appelwick was a lifetime resident and businessman in the community of Madison. As a youth he was an outstanding athlete at Madison Central High School and Augustana College, where he was an early inductee into that school's "Athletic Hall of Fame." This honor was bestowed because of his prowess and achievements in basketball and football, gaining All-Conference recognition numerous times in both sports. Following his graduation from Augustana, Omar coached one year at Jefferson, South Dakota, moving to Madison the following year where he coached basketball at the St. Thomas High School for nine years until its closing in 1945.
Herbert Webb Blakely Memorial Scholarship
Established in 2001 by Gerald Lange and faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of Herb Blakely, past faculty member and coach at DSU. The fund is designed to aid in the recruitment of, or provides assistance to, men and women's cross country and track scholar/athletes.
The Class of 1997 Scholarship
The Class of 1997 Women's Basketball Scholarship Endowment was established by DSU Lady T's members Danielle Nolte and Michelle Butash-Daniels. The scholarship is designed to assist in the recruitment of quality women basketball players to the Lady T's basketball program.
Danielle and Michelle were the first recruiting class for Coach Jeff Dittman. Prior to their arrival, the women's basketball team compiled a 4-24 season record. In the next four years, Danielle and Michelle would help rebuild the Lady T's basketball program. In their senior year, Dakota State would record an 18-10 record and a third place finish in an extremely competitive South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference. This would be the first of many nationally-recognized teams for the Dakota State women's basketball program.
Danielle Nolte was a Brandon High School graduate, majoring in Information Systems. An outstanding student, Danielle was twice named NAIA Academic All-American. A 5'10" forward, she was also an All-Conference selection while finishing 8th in career points with 976 points. She also left career marks in rebounding with 545 rebounds(7th), steals (131 – 9th), blocked shots (33 – 6th), and 7th in field goals. Danielle shot 48.8% from the field, ranking her 6th in career field goal percentage, and 66.7% from the free-throw line, 5th in career free-throw percentage. Danielle is employed as a systems analyst for Mutual of Omaha.
Michelle Butash-Daniels graduated from Berkley High School in Michigan. She was a scholarship athlete in basketball and track while attending DSU and distinguished herself in both. At 5'4", Michelle was an extremely quick point guard who could break down any team's press while also causing havoc on the defensive end. Michelle finished her career with 226 steals, ranking her 2nd all-time for DSU. She also knocked down 36 three-point shots, good for 9th all-time. Michelle was named MVP of the Grinnell College Tournament her senior year, helping the Lady T's to the tournament championship. She was also named MVP of the SDIC Conference track meet twice, finishing in the top five in eleven different track and field events. Michelle also qualified for the NAIA National Meet her junior and senior seasons. Michelle graduated with an Exercise Science major and is employed by the Oakland Athletic Club in Birmingham, Michigan.
Alan Ende Memorial Scholarship
Alan Ende, class of 1981, received a degree in biology and physical sciences, and went on the become a research scientist with Pan America University and a chemist with Sili-Tex Company of San Marcos, CA. Shortly after his death in 1987, this endowment was established by Alan's many friends who valued his determination and positive attitude though out his educational career and his lifelong struggle with poor health. Funding is continued annually through the Alan Ende Memorial Golf Tournament. Recipients of these scholarships must participate in track or cross country. Selection is made through the DSU Athletic Director and Cross Country and Track Coach.
Fiegen Price Athletic Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2004, by former Lady T's basketball player Julie Fiegen-Price, the Fiegen Price Athletic Scholarship is awarded to an incoming women's basketball player, who is an elementary education or elementary/special education major. If there are no basketball players that are qualified, the scholarship goes to an elementary education major.
Mike Freidel Football Endowed Scholarship
Mike Freidel, '79, was an outstanding football player at DSU. In 2000, he was inducted into the DSU Athletic Hall of Fame, and in 2007, the 1977 football team, of which he was a member, was inducted into the DSU Athletic Hall of Fame. Mike was a college football coach throughout his professional career, at Dakota State, Southwest Minnesota State, Augustana and the University of South Dakota. This scholarship is awarded to an NAIA eligible defensive player at DSU with preference to a South Dakota high school graduate. In 2008, teammates, players, friends and family established the endowment in Mike's honor.
Dr. Monty Friedow Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in loving memory of Dr. Monty Friedow who died of cancer in 1994 at the age of 36. Monty was first diagnosed with cancer during his senior year at Madison High School. He was the son of Doyce and Audrey Friedow of Madison. Dr. Friedow did undergraduate studies at Dakota State University and then went on to receive a doctorate in Optometry at Pacific University in 1983. Monty, his wife Elizabeth (Green), and their children moved back to Madison in 1987 where he practiced optometry. Dr. Friedow was an enthusiastic Trojan fan and enjoyed working closely with athletes and coaches. This scholarship is given annually to a men's basketball player who is an upperclassman in good character and academic standing who has also represented DSU as an outstanding student athlete.
Dawn Gaffney Scholarship
This women's basketball endowment was established by Lou Gaffney on behalf of his daughter, Dawn, to assist in the recruitment of quality women basketball players. Dawn was a four-year letter winner at Dakota State from 1994-1998. Her basketball accomplishments were outstanding including being named Dakota State's first third team NAIA All-American in 1998. In 1997 and 1998, Dawn was also named NAIA Academic All-American. She also was selected as a recipient of the John Wollman Award, which is given to one female and one male in the conference who best represents the student athletes. Her senior year she was named first team SDIC female Athlete of the Year for both her academic and athletic achievements. The fund is designed to aid in the recruitment of, and to provide assistance to, women's basketball scholar/athletes.
Titan John Gioglio Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established on Sept. 19, 2002 in loving memory of Dakota State University's Athletic Director Tom Gioglio and wife Melissa's infant son. This endowment could not have been created without the generosity and kindness of the following family and friends:

The recipient of this annual scholarship must be a student participating in varsity athletics at DSU with a 3.5 GPA and is involved in community service activities.
Maurice "Ed" Harter Scholarship
Created to honor Men's Basketball Coach Ed Harter for his 28 years of dedication to the Dakota State Men's basketball program. This scholarship is awarded to a new or returning men's basketball player.
Honermann Family Scholarship
This women's basketball scholarship was established by Rick and Diane Honermann on behalf of their daughter Heidi and their niece Jessica to assist the Lady T's in the recruitment of quality women basketball players. Both players are graduates of Adrian High School and were standout prep athletes for the southwest Minnesota community.
Heidi was a four-year letter winner at Dakota State from 1997 through 2001. A two-time Academic All-American, Heidi was one of the most proficient long-range shooters to ever play at Dakota State. She finished as the all-time leader in 3-point field goal percentage (40.1%) and third all-time 3-point field goal shooter (163 made). While outstanding at the offensive end, Heidi was a key to the Lady T's defensive success and finished seventh in career steals. She was one of the top defenders in the Dakota-10 conference her senior season. Heidi was a member of two Conference Championship teams that also advanced to the NAIA National Tournament where they finished in the "Sweet Sixteen" and "Elite Eight" rounds.
Jessica was a four-year letter winner from 1999 to 2003. The 6-0" forward was an All-DAC 10 performer and is found throughout the DSU record books. Jess reached the 1,000 point mark on February 13th against Huron University and finished her career with 1070 points (8th overall). She finished first in career blocked shots (153) and has single season blocked shots records of fifty-two (1st), forty-two (3rd), thirty-two (7th) and 27(9th).Jessica also finished 5th in career steals (188), 7th in career rebounds (602), 10th in career field goals (430) and career 3-point field goals (39). She also finished 1st in single season 3-point field goal percentage 53.1% and 5th in career field goal percentage (51.3%). Jessica was also a member of two conference championship squads (1999 and 2000) and three NAIA National qualifying teams (2000, 2001, and 2003).
Leslie Grayson Kern Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in the everlasting tribute to Leslie Grayson Kern. On September 16, 1997, Leslie Grayson Kern died after a battle with cervical cancer. She was born and raised in Madison, SD and graduated from Madison High School. She attended one semester at DSU in 1988. Mrs. Kern will be remembered for her optimism, strength, and dedication to her family. She married Brian Kern who attended DSU in 1986 and 1987 and competed in varsity football and was All Conference and All District Defensive Nose Guard. As a lasting tribute to his wife, Brian established this endowment in her honor. This award is restricted to the students participating in football. The recipient must demonstrate qualities of leadership, good character, and success in academics.
Claude A. Mallory Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established by a bequest from the estate of Mr. Mallory, longtime Madison businessman. This endowment funds scholarships to graduates of Madison High School who plan to attend DSU as incoming traditional freshmen and participate in intercollegiate sports. The DSU Athletic Director participates in the selection of the recipients, which are based on academic achievement and athletic ability.
Thomas Murphy Memorial Scholarship
Thomas Murphy was born in River Falls, WI in 1949. Mr. Murphy died in Vietnam, April 1, 1970, while serving his country in the armed forces. The Thomas Murphy memorial scholarship is awarded annually to a "walk on" football player who earns his spot on the team through hard work and determination and meets scholastic requirements.
Dakota State University appreciates the generosity and vision of Mr. Gerald Murphy in the endowment of this scholarship in memory of his brother and others who gave their lives to serve their country. The DSU head football coach and the DSU Athletic Director participate in the selection of the award recipient. (merged with the DSU Football Endowed Scholarship)
Jane Nielsen Memorial Scholarship
Jane Nielsen was the mother of Erin Nielsen who played for the Lady T's women's basketball team from 1999-2003. Throughout Erin's first two seasons as a Lady T, Jane only missed 3 games out of nearly 70 contests. Jane was a mom to the Lady T's players whose parents couldn't make it to games. She was a positive person who cared about the student athletes. For these reasons and many more, Jane was named as the Lady T's "Most Valuable Mom!"
During Erin's junior season, Jane suffered health complications that prevented her from attending many of Erin's games. Her health continued to decline and Jane passed away at the end of Erin's senior year.
This endowment has been created in Jane's memory for a Lady T who exemplifies a similar level of commitment, determination, and pride to the team as she once did. The family of Jane Nielsen asks that this scholarship be awarded to a second year athlete, who is in good academic standing and exemplifies a high level of commitment, determination and pride to the team based on first year experiences. The recipient of this scholarship must also show need for financial assistance, if possible, coming from a single parent family.
John Michael Pecks Memorial Scholarship
Dwayne and Edith Pecks, both graduates of the class of 1956, created this endowment in loving memory of their son, John Michael. Scholarships are awarded to deserving incoming freshman students who intend to participate in athletics at DSU and who are from high schools in South Dakota and Southwestern Minnesota within 100 miles of DSU.
Maurice and Alice Poppen Scholarship
This endowment was established on December 19, 2002 by Maurice and Alice Poppen. This scholarship will award $1,000 per year for four years to a freshman men's basketball player. The student athlete who receives this scholarship must maintain a 2.5 cumulative grade point average. Selection is made by the DSU men's basketball coaching staff.
Lynn and Terry Ryan Scholarship
This endowment was established in October 2003 by Lynn and Terry Ryan to assist in the recruitment of quality student-athletes to the women's basketball program. Terry and Lynn began work at DSU in 1975. Prior to coming to DSU, Terry completed his undergraduate degree in Engineering at Purdue University and his Master's Degree in Student Services from Indiana University. Terry left Indiana without catching the basketball bug. But, after running the shot clock for years at DSU home games, we are proud to say he is now a full-fledged basketball fan. Terry retired from DSU in December 2003 after 28 years of leadership as the Dean of Students.
Lynn completed her undergraduate degree at Spaulding College in Louisville, KY, then received her Master's Degree in French from Indiana University. The combination of growing up in Kentucky and attending Indiana University led to her love of basketball, in particular Kentucky Wildcat basketball. Lynn has been a member of the English faculty throughout her tenure and spent the majority of her time as the International advisor.
Terry and Lynn have a daughter, Colleen, who completed her undergraduate degree at Bellarmine University in Kentucky and also has a love for Kentucky hoops.
Terry and Lynn have donated this endowment with the belief that successful student-athletes must learn skills that will last them a lifetime. These skills include hard work, teamwork, sportsmanship and the ability to demonstrate class in winning and losing. Terry and Lynn chose to donate this endowment to the women's basketball program based on its history of producing successful scholars, leaders, and athletes.
This scholarship is awarded to a new or continuing women's basketball student-athlete with a GPA of 3.00 or higher. This student-athlete must have a significant involvement or leadership role in student activities. Roles may include Resident Assistant, Student Assistants, or be an officer of a campus organization.
Kari Satter-Holman Scholarship
The Kari Satter scholarship was set up by her parents, Robert and Barbara Satter in 2000, to honor their daughter, Kari Satter Holman, class of 1999. An outstanding three-sport high school athlete from Irene, SD, Kari brought her athletic and academic skills to DSU and had immediate impact on the women's basketball program. For her collegiate career, Kari was twice named to the SDIC All Conference squad and was selected an Academic All-American in 1999. Recipients of this scholarship are continuing students from South Dakota and participate in Women's Basketball.
Karl and LaDonna Schulz Scholarship
This endowment was established on December 29, 2003 by Karl and LaDonna Schulz. Karl and LaDonna (Silkenson) graduated from General Beadle State College in 1960 with degrees in Education. Karl played football for three years at GBSC and LaDonna was a cheerleader. This scholarship will be awarded to a student athlete, with preference given to students from Brookings County or Deubrook High School. Selection is made by the DSU Athletic Director.
Kathy Shypulski Scholarship
This scholarship for women's basketball was established by Jerry and Ann Shypulski on behalf of their daughter Kathy. "Kat" was an outstanding basketball player who helped lead DSU to two conference championships while advancing to the NAIA National Tournament her junior and senior seasons. DSU advanced to the "Elite Eight" and "Sweet Sixteen" rounds at the post-season tournament.
While helping the team reach their goals, Kathy was also a 1st team All-Conference selection twice, was named honorable mention All-American in 2000 and 2nd team All-American in 2001 and two time Academic All-American. By the end of her career, Kathy's name was listed 32 times in the DSU record books. She was 3rd in career scoring with 1432 points, 1st in career 3-point field goals, 1st in career free throw shooting accuracy, 3rd in career assists, 3rd in career 3-point field goal accuracy, 5th in career field goals, and 6th in career free throws. Kathy's senior year, she was named the Most Valuable Senior Basketball Athlete in the Dakota-10 Conference.
Christian Steiber Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2001 through the estate of Lucille Steiber, widow of Christian Steiber. Christian Steiber attended DSU around 1916, but did not graduate from the University. He and his wife lived in Arizona most of their lives. Their gift to DSU is one of the largest in the University's history and supports both academic and athletic scholarship programs. Awards are made based on a student's financial need.
Tunheim and Friends Garden Coop Athletic Endowed Scholarship
Nancy and Dr. Jerald Tunheim established this endowment in 2008. With help from family and friends, Nancy and Dr. Tunheim plant, tend and harvest a largen garden. More than twenty families purchase coop memberships that entitle them to the friuts and vegeatables producted. The proceeds from the coop memberships, supplemented by a personal contribution from Nancy and Dr. Tunheim, fund this endowment. Scholarships are given to DSU women's basketball players who maintain a 2.8 GPA.
Dr. Jerry Tunheim Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established on November 20, 2003 through the generosity of the following founding donors:

Dr. Jerald Tunheim was the President of Dakota State University from 1987 to 2004. The DSU Athletic program was elevated to new heights during Dr. Tunheim's presidency. The Field house and football stadium were renovated and the training and locker rooms were upgraded. His leadership at the University and in the community of Madison was instrumental in the building of the Community Center. The impact these renovations and new buildings had on recruitment has been tremendous. Because of Dr. Tunheim's vision for athletics at the university, DSU has some of the best facilities in the conference and nation. Recipients of the Dr. Jerald Tunheim Athletic Scholarship must participate in varsity athletics. Selection is made by the DSU Athletic Director.
Lisa Bernard Wachlarowicz Memorial Scholarship
This endowment was established in 1990 to honor the memory of Lisa Bernard-Wachlarowicz, class of 1980. Lisa, a Jefferson, SD native, was an active athlete and an elementary and learning disabilities educator who died in 1989 after a two-year battle with cancer. This scholarship is awarded to a student participating in either women's basketball or volleyball with a preference to an education major.
Hilbertus A. and Goldie A. Wieman Family Scholarship
This endowment, established in 2001, is intended to be a memorial to Hilbertus A. Wieman, husband of Goldie A. Wieman, and father of Randy, David, Glenda, Eldon, Norman, Carol, and Gloria. Five of the children received their degrees from Dakota State University and at times there were two attending at the same time. Recipients at this scholarship must be an incoming student; either freshman or transfer. They must be academically deserving, in need of financial assistance, and they must demonstrate qualities of good leadership and good character. Preference will also be given to graduates of high schools in South Dakota within a 100-mile radius of Dakota State University. Priority consideration to students who attend Marion, Canistota, Harrisburg, Tri-Valley or Madison High School.
Ernest S. Henning Memorial Scholarship
The Ernest S. Henning Memorial Scholarship was set up to honor Ernest S. Henning, father of Dakota State Volleyball Coach, Cynthia Henning. Ernie was a strong supporter of the Trojan Volleyball Program and of his daughter. Through the generous contributions of family and friends, this scholarship pays tribute to a wonderful man and father who inspired and touched the lives of not only his daughter but everyone who came in contact with him. This award is given annually to a volleyball player who upholds the values of hard work, commitment, and competitive spirit that Ernest enjoyed watching in the Trojan Volleyball program.
