2008-09 Season Outlook
Women’s
Last season at the 2008 Indoor Conference Championships, the Dakota State women’s track and field team managed to edge out Minot State to finish 4th behind Black Hills, Dickinson and Jamestown. This indoor season, the Lady Trojans hope to close the gap even a little further. Heading into the 2009 indoor season, the team is optimistic that further progress can be accomplished as the Trojans return the entire 2008 roster with the exception of Kari Schaefer. “Kari will be a tough loss for us, but most teams will be in similar situations. Eventually they all have to graduate and move on, but it’s still difficult to see your athletes go,” said Coach Mack. Mack will be entering is second track season at Dakota State since arriving in January of 2008.
Dakota State will look for the help of their only senior, and seven time national qualifier Bobbi Jo Dykstra to be a major contributor. Dykstra did not compete at the Conference Championships last season due to a strained leg muscle. Other key returners for the Lady Trojans in the middle distance and distance events include Suzanne Swett, Clarice Bauer, Samantha Warnke, Loni Van Regenmorter, and freshman Stephanie Warnke and Paula Kappenman. The jumps will be led by Margie Anthony, who finished 4th in the triple jump last season, and transfer Danielle Rowe. Rowe was the runner-up at the Indoor National Championships in 2008. The sprints and hurdles will be a very young but talented group led by returning junior hurdler Kim Streyle, and sophomore sprinters Brandi Gau and Amy Pheneger.
A handful of new freshman will join them including Casey Dolezal, Sara Schultz, and Karisa Hartje. Completing the Lady Trojans roster includes Janelle Stickler, indoor national qualifier in the pole vault, and Katie Gylfe, who set a personal best throw in the weight throw at the conference meet last season to score in the team points. “We are still a very young team, but I see a lot of competitiveness in our athletes. That type of attitude can accomplish a lot throughout the season. Every returning athlete contributed points at the Conference meet last year, which shows tremendous team potential. The Indoor Conference meet is held towards the end of February, but it’s what we do between now and then that will be the deciding factor in how well we are prepared.”
