The Sports Medicine team at Dakota State University is committed to providing comprehensive, high-quality medical services to every student-athlete in a very timely fashion. On-site medical services provided include, but are not limited to, prevention, evaluation, and treatment of injuries and illnesses, rehabilitation services, and pre-participation exams. The primary sports medicine team is comprised of a team orthopedic physician and 2 state licensed athletic trainers. This professional staff is responsible for the healthcare and safety of over 300 student-athletes.
Our team consists of:
Keith Baumgarten, M.D. -- Team Orthopedic Physician
Dr. Keith Baumgarten joined the Dakota State University Sports Medicine Team in August 2005. Dr. Baumgarten graduated from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, after which he completed a residency at Washington University - Barnes Jewish Hospital. Dr. Baumgarten also completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. While there, he was also an Associate Physician with the New York Mets baseball team. Dr. Baumgarten specializes in sports medicine and shoulder surgery and also practices general orthopedics. He is Board Eligible by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.
Brad Gilbert, L/ATC, CSCS -- Head Athletic Trainer
Mr. Brad Gilbert joined the Dakota State University Staff in August of 1997 after serving as a Graduate Assistant athletic trainer at South Dakota State University. Gilbert is a Montana native where he completed his under graduate degree from the University of Montana.
Ross Reede, M.S., L/ATC, CSCS -- Assistant Athletic Trainer
Mr. Ross Reede joined the Dakota State University Staff in August of 2007 after receiving his Masters of Science degree in Health Physical Education and Recreation with an emphasis in Athletic Training from South Dakota State University. Reede received his undergraduate degree in Wellness Management from Black Hills State University.
