Chris StoebnerAssistant Coach Chris Stoebner

Chris Stoebner is entering his first year as Dakota State University women's basketball assistant coach.  He is a Harrisburg, S.D. native and a former South Dakota State University men's basketball standout.

"I am so excited to be part of Dakota State University and the women's basketball program," said Stoebner.  "I would like to thank President Dr. Knowlton, Athletic Director Gene Wockenfuss and Head Coach Joe Reints for giving me the opportunity to coach at Dakota State.  Dakota State is a great university and it is an honor to be working for the university and under Coach Reints.  I know I will learn so much from Coach Reints and I am looking forward to working alongside him.  Coach Reints is not only a great coach, but he is a great person.  I feel like I can bring energy and passion to the women's basketball program and be a piece in helping the program reach their goals.  I really feel we have a great group of girls coming back and that will make the transition an easy one."

Stoebner came to Dakota State from St. Olaf (Minn.) where he was an assistant men's basketball coach last season.  Prior to St. Olaf, he was the girls' basketball head coach and guidance counselor at Orono High School in Long Lake, Minn. for three years.

Stoebner graduated from South Dakota State University with a bachelor's degree in psychology in 2004 and master's degree in counseling and human resource development in 2007.  He played on the Jackrabbits men's basketball team during his four-year collegiate career and qualified to the regional tournament in each year.  He was a member of the North Central Conference (NCC) championship teams in 2001 and 2002 (under head coach Scott Nagy).  Stoebner was named All-Conference team in his senior year and earned NCC All-Academic Honorable Mention in 2002 and 2003.

While continuing his education at SDSU, he was the student assistant coach for the Jackrabbits men's basketball program for one season.  He was the head freshmen girls' basketball coach for two years at Brookings High School.  He also was the head freshmen boys' basketball coach during the 2006-07 season.

"I am really excited about Coach Stoebner joining our program," said Reints.  "Chris brings a wealth of basketball experience as a player and a coach to our program.  He is very well connected to programs in South Dakota and Minnesota and is very eager to hit the recruiting trail.  His passion, knowledge and love for the game of basketball are going to make him a great coach.  I feel he is going to be a tremendous asset to our program and Dakota State University."

Stoebner will also guide the Dakota State's junior varsity women's basketball program.

"Chris brings experience as a head coach in the high school ranks as well as his time spent at St. Olaf College in Minnesota as an assistant," said Gene Wockenfuss (DSU Athletic Director).  "What excites me the most about Chris's resume is the network of contacts in both South Dakota and Minnesota that will impact our recruiting.  I'm very excited about having Chris and his wife Jona join the DSU Athletic family."
